Conference
Final plans are being made for
the aouthern Oregon educational
conference and intitute which
In to be held in Ashland from
September 9 to 12, inclusive.
Some 800 teachers from five
southern Oregon counties will
participate. These counties arc
Klamath, Lake, Josephine, Jack
aon and Curry.
The nature of the conference
and institute this year is wholly
different from the one usually
held in November. Teachers and
administrators will be given
four-day training session fittinc
them for the year's tasks ahead
of them. Teachers will work
over the material to be covered
in their classes making unit and
lesson plans.
Many prominent leaders Ii
education and news commenta
tors have been invited to con
tribute. Leading successful
teachers assisted by college staft
members of SOC will direct tht
workshop groups.
Preceding the conference and
running with it will be a two
week workshop for teachers who
are planning to review or tako
out emergency certificates to
teach in the elementary schools
of the state. An upper division
and eraduate course designed for
secondary teachers will be taught
during the same period. Dr.
Hugh Wool of the university of
Oregon will be in charge of this
workshop which is put on by the
extension division of the statr
system of higher education.

BOBBY SCOGGINS
The day the railroad strike
ended, Bobby Scoggins. 10-year-old
Herald and News seller, hit
pay dirt. He sold 50 papers and
made S3. 15 and that ain't hay.
Bobbv is the son of Mr. and Mrs.
William Robert Scoggins. 1335
Sargent, and was born Decem
ber 5. 1935. He came here in
1943 from Arkansas and for the
Fast five months. Bobby has sold
papers. Right now the Fairview
sixth grader has an objective.
He's paying for his bicycle on
the installment plan and reve
nue from afternoon sales are
meeting the payments. Bobby's
dad works at the Southern Pa
cific. His favorite hobby is
swimming and he has enrolled
in the summer swim classes.

since joining UNRRA. He writes
"It was really quite an experi
ence my first two months at ,
UNRRA lone headquarters in
Munich. I was working in spe
cial services, which plans the
entertainment for the people in
headquarters. Headquarters was
like a small world, for all na
tionalities were under one roof."
He goes on to say that as
much as he enjoyed this work it
was still not what he wanted to
do so "I asked for a transfer
and am now on a team where
UNRRA really does its work. I
am in Cham, by the Ciech bor
der. The team has five camps
and my work is in the Jewish
infiltration camp. The army has
decided to open up Germany's
borders to all persons formerly
persecuted by the naiis so we
are setting up a sort of hotel
affair here on the border where
we will receive the people and !
feed and bed them for one or i

Describing teamlife he savs:
"Teamlife is fun, but quiet. We
have two houses, about 10 people
on the team. It is a compatible
lot. only three Americans so the
continentals aren't swamped under."

The Hart mountain antelope
trip was well under way today
and members from all over the
west are en route to the famous
Blue Sky hotel to spend their
annual vacation.
