Of Scientists' Deaths
; In Atom Work Accidents

troyer squadron and submarine
flotilla. The submarine sank
almost immediately with all
aboard.

scribe the atomic chain reaction
set up last May 21 when Dr.
Louis B. Slotin, 35, Winnipeg,
Canada, was burned fatally dur
ing an experiment at the Los
Alamos atomic laboratory.
- The report also disclosed that
the accident that cost the life
of another scientist, Harry K.
Daglian, 24, New London, Conn.,
in September was "almost iden
tical ' In both cases equipment slipped
allowing fissionable materials of
the type used in atom bombs to
come together swiftly instead of

Slotin were burned, but re
covered. Daglian was working
alone.
Equipment Slipped
The army report gave this de
scription of the accident:
"An accident occurred when

point. This resulted in a tre
mendous energy release within
ijnillionths of a second, which
was evidenced to the persons
present through a sensation of
feat and visual perception of a
ilue glow around the material.
"In the words of one of the
men present, 'it was like you
.were standing near an arc weld
er when he struck the arc.'
"The blue glow resulted from
the ionization of air particles by
radiation emanating from the fis
sionable material. There was no
explosion in the sense that there
ivere no mechanical effects, no
debris, no noise.
"In the millionths of a second
Jn which this occurred, the im
mediate area and all in it were
tombarded by intense high en
ergy gama rays and netrons of
11 energies fast, intermediate
nd slow. There were no beta
Mad no alpha radiation. . . .
Companions Saved
"Dr. Slotin, at the instant of
the mishap, knocked the equip
ment apart, thus halting the in
tensifying radiation and avert
ing serious consequences, pos
sibly death to his companions.
He was grasping pari or me
equipment with his left hand at
the moment of the accident." ,
The report told of Immediate
removal to the Los Alamos hos
pital of the eight men, and the
wait of several days before
effects of radiation were appar
ent. Slotin died in nine days.
'The medical men began to
treat the accident victims as
soon as they were admitted to
the hospital," the report said.
"This treatment, in general, con
sisted of many transfusions of
whole blood and plasma and
fluids, principally glucose and
saline."
The report said the burns suf
fered by Slotin were comparable
to a "three-dimensional sun
burn," explaining: "The skin
burns from the radiation are
superficial, but as the rays pene
trate the body they burn deep,
resulting in injury and destruc
tion of tissue and blood cells."
Daglian, whose burns were
less severe, died in 26 days after
the accident.

Crater Luke national park will
open to the public at 8 a. m. Sun
day, June 80. This entrance to
the park joins II. S. highway 97
at point 51 miles north of
Klamath Fulls and 93 miles south
of Bend. It Is eight mill's from
highway 97 to the park boundary
and another three miles to Lust
Creek runner stution where visi
tors will register and obtain per
mits. The old dirt rond from Lost
Creek to Sun Crock, a distance
of four miles, will be used until
the new rond from Kerr Notch

and rock slides. This section of
