For Big Irrigation Job

'Contracts lor construction of
the largest irrigation canal ever
built in the Pacific northwest,
ilo furnish water for the Colum
bia basin Drolect in Washing
ton, have been awarded by me
interior department.
The department announced
today that a tunnel through
solid rock, nearly two miles
'long and 23 feet in diameter;
'a siphon, and 1000 feet of the
(main canal of the project, will
'be constructed by T. E. Con
jnolly, Inc., San Francisco. The
(firm was awarded the job on a
(Lid of $3,494,420. A second con
tract awarded to J. A. Tertel
Ing and Sons, Inc., of Boise,
Idaho, calls for construction . of
S.4 miles of the main canal for
$1,548,060.
The tunncf and canals will
carry water stored by Grand
Coulee dam to the 1.200.000
acre irrigation project of which
the reclamation bureau hopes
to have 7,000 acres irrigated by
1947.
The tunnel and canals will
carry water from an equalizing
reservoir created by construct
ing dams at both ends of a 27
mile gorge of the old Columbia
river channel. The water will
be pumped from Lake Roose
velt, formed by Grand Coulee
dam. The main canal will -extend
to another reservoir to be

Five Klamath Falls boys will
leave Sunday for Corvallis
where they will attend the
American Legion sponsored
Boys State from June 30 to
July 7. The boys will specialize
in government training and ap
plication. Going from here are Harlan
Bosworth 3rd, sponsored by the
Kotary club; Ronald Wood,
sponsored by Robert Odell and
Fred Heilbronner; Bill Carter,
sponsored by the Legion club;
Harry Cook, sponsored by
American Legion post No. 8;
Charles Heilbronner, sponsored
by the Lions club.
Young Heilbronner will have
charge of the group as the eldest
of the five. He attended Boys
State last year. A. H. Bussman
is chairman of the committee
making arrangements for the
local group.

Of Matsuoka
PORTLAND, Ore., June 27

ed in 1933 by former Japanese
Foreign Minister Yosuke Mat
suoka to the American woman
who once sheltered him is a re
minder here of the years Mat
suoka lived as a Portlandcr.
Matsuoka came to Portland as
a 13-year-old Japanese mission
boy'' in 1893 and soon was taken
into the home of Mrs. Isabelle
Dunbar Beveridge, now de
ceased, while he attended gram
mar school.
The very little Yosuke, wear
ing Oriental short trousers and
a winning smile, earned part
of his keep delivering coffee to
city restaurants while he learned
his ABC's. He completed high
school at Oakland. Calif., but
returned to Portland to enroll
in the University of Oregon law
school here and at the Eugene
campus, graduating in 1900.

Classmates recall his pass'0"
for stud poker and his excellent
law school honors. When he
entered Japanese - diplomatic
service in 1904 his rapid rise was
watched closely and with
pride by Portland friends.
When he returned to Portland
in 1933. his last visit, he al
ready was world famous. That
same year he walked out of the
League of Nations chambers at
Geneva, taking with him the
membership of the Japanese na
tion in protest to the league's
action in the Sino-Japanese in
cidents then troubling Asia.
The red granite grave head
stone he purchased and dedicated
April 10, 1933, to Mrs. Beveridge
bears the text:
"Raised by the loving hands
of Yosuke Matsuoka in token
of the lasting gratitude for the
sympathy and gentle kindness
of a woman, who. next to his
mother, shaped his mind and
character."
