To Corvallis Field Day
Potato seed growers, seed State college campus. The group
dealers, and all interested parties will leave the campus at 9 o'clock
of Klamath county are invited for the test plot which is located
to attend the potato test plot on the Children s Farm Home
field day to be held in Corvallis, three miles north of Corvallis

in two-plant units of 200-tuber
samples from fields entered for
foundation and certified seed
potatoes in Oregon in 1945. The

Advice Given
On Freezers
Buying a freezing cabinet for
the farm requires the consider
ation of efficiency in freezing
and preserving food and econo
my of operation, was the opinion
of Lucy Case, extension nutri
tionist of Oregon State college,
expressed last week at a demon
stration on preparing foods for
the locker given at the Winema
hotel.
Prompt repair service is one
of the first considerations of a
buyer. If repairs are not made
quickly, the frozen contents will
spoil. Purchasers are more sure
of service from well-etablished
companies who will offer serv
ices after 90-day guarantees have
expired.
An efficient cabinet will hold
a temperature of zero degrees
Fahrenheit, according to re
search conducted by the OSC ex
periment station, Miss Case
pointed out.
Any insulating material, re
gardless of its resistance to
water, must be completely sealed
on the outside wall of the cabi
net to prevent penetration of
water vapor. Unless the insula
tion is kept free of moisture con
densing, it is likely to become a
solid mass of ice which will de
stroy the insulating qualities,
Miss Case adds.
Door Seal Advocated
Doors with a wide gasket, a
double seal with sponge rubber
or other suitable gaskets, will
prevent ice from forming around
the door. A thermometer that
is visible from the outside is
useful to indicate the tempera
ture inside the cabinet.
The best freezing cabinets pro
vide space for circulation of air
between food packages and floor,
walls and ceiling. The freezing
plate is located where it can
keep the outer walls cold.
A cool, clean, well-ventilated
place for the air compressor will
keep the operating cost down.
A damp location causes many
cabinets to sweat and rust, the
lids or doors to stick and the
refrigeration plates or coils to
frost up rapidly.
Miss Case reported that the
OSC experiment station is work
ing on plans for a homemade
freezing cabinet.

orders for 2000 new lightweight
refrigerator cars embodying rad
ical improvements in design and
construction. Deliveries are
scheduled to start the first quar
ter of 1947.
This large purchase of ultra
modern equipment, recently au
thorized by Southern Pacific
and Union Pacific for PFE's
1946 improvement program, will
give the company a total of more
than 38,000 cars. Its fleet, larg
est of its kind in the world, car
ries the great bulk of western
perishable crops to distant mar
kets. To be constructed of lighter,
stronger metals, the new cars
wil weigh about 4000 pounds
less than conventional refriger
ator cars and will incorporate
numerous structural changes de
veloped from Pacific Fruit Ex
press company s extensive ex
periments in laboratory and
shop, and from suggestions by
the trade. Every effort was made
in designing these cars, it was
stated, to anticipate possible fu
ture refrigerator car require
ments in the event experiments
now being conducted result in
radical changes in preparing per
ishable freight for market.
Insulation Improved
Better insulation and easier
riding qualities are outstanding
features of the improved de
signs, thoroughly tested under
actual operating conditions in
four experimental cars, PFE
said. The principal innovations
in fittings and appliances in
elude new-type convertible bulk
heads, improved fans for cir
culating air inside the car, air
ducts in car walls, herringbone
floor racks, one-piece hatch
closures, wrought steel wheels

Thickness of insulating ma
terials, it was explained, has
been increased and encased be
tween sheets of a special product
which seals out water vapor and
reflects radiant heat. The im
proved convertible bulkheads,
which form the ice bunkers in
each end of the car. may be
folded back to give maximum
space for loads that move under
top and body icing.
The fans are located under
the floor racks, adjacent to the
bulkheads, and operate by fric
tion from the tread of the mov
ing car wheel. They can be op
erated by electric motor for pre
cooling. Perfected by PFE, the
air ducts are an entirely new
feature of refrigerator cars.
They were devised to promote
the circulation of air around
solid loads.
In announcing these specifi
cations for the new cars, Pacific
Fruit Express said the. improve
ments would be built into its
present cars as they go to the
shops for reconditioning.

celling prices are 25 cents per

on oats, 0 cents higher on bur
ley, 10 cents higher on rye, and
18 cents per hundredweight
higher on grain sorghums.
