CIO Gets Test
At Polls Today
By The Aaaoclalsd Praia
Primaries in four itates rang
up the off-year election curtain
today, and In two of them the
CIO political action committee
aought to demonstrate ita con
tinued effectiveneas at the polla.
Top Intereat centered in the
four-cornered race for the dem
ocratic sanatoria! nomination in
Ohio and the two-man Content
for the district Alabama house
aeut both featured by PAC ac
tivity. Indiana and Florida also held
prlmarlos. In all, the four states
will select candidates for two
teriata and 49 house seats In con
gress, two gubernatorial nomina
tions also are at stake.
Advance indlcationi pointed
to a generally light vote. Ohio,
Indiana and Florida reported
lers thun lukewarm interest on
the part of the voters. In Ala
bama, however, heavy registra
tion, particularly by war vet
erans, led to expectations of a
record primary vote.
The Alabama and Florida bal
loting was noteworthy because
negroei were voting officially
statewide for the first time in
the hitherto "white" primaries.
Hut neither state expected much
of a negro vote.
Politicians gave their main at
tention to the showing of PAC
in Ohio and Alabama. They
aaALD si wrwa, KUa.au rin, Ot. ti esdav. Mar , lau, aa nm
hoped to be able to gauge how
important a factor the organiza
tion Is apt to be in this fall's
national election.
