The Cincinnati Reds squelched

Cooper Injured
The New York Giants suffered
a double blow as they not only
bowed to the Boston Braves for
the second straight time. 5-4, but
lost the services of their ace
Catcher Walker Cooper as well.
Cooper suffered a fracture of his
finger on his right hand when
Carvel (Bama) Powell fouled off
one of Monte Kennedy's pitches.
Cooper will be out of the lineup
for at least four weeks.
The Chicago White Sox finally
combined tight pitching and
stout hitting as they thrashed
the Cleveland Indians 11-2 on a
17-hit assault.

out of the amateur ranks today
to sign for a 10-round pro bout
against Miguel Rubi, Mexico
City, here May 3.
Calhoun, 23, was chosen the
best fighter in the AAU tourney
here. His debut against Rubi
will be one of three 10-rounders
on the National Boxing club's
May 3 card.
The other matches will pit
Tommy Moyer and Eddie Whar
ton, Portland welterweights; and
Duane Hoag, Portland and Bert
White, Los Angeles, in a return
featherweight event.

letters asking why stories of big
leasue and Pacific Coast league
baseball games each day are not
run on this page, which comniu
nications have
surprised us no
end because
the stories,
game results
and standings
are run every
day.

every day and
Pacific Coast
loop games are in rnother AP
roundup story. The standings
and game results are printed un
der a permanent head.
Morning papers, such as the
Oregonian, have a slight advaiv
tage over PMs in that they have
results of ball games played any
afternoon or night in the paper
next morning. Also for these
papers the Associated Press pre
pares individual stories of each
game. For afternoon papers all
the games are incorporated into
a general story. That's what we
get over the wire and that's what
is printed daily in The Herald
and News.
Here's the situation. Take any
particular day, Tuesday for ex
ample. The major league and
Coast league games are played
either in the afternoon or at
night. This paper receives the
results, corrected standings and
stories the next morning and
they are published that after
noon. Tuesday's games are pub
lished on Wednesday's sports
page.
Games back there start at
11:30 a. m. to 1 p. m. our time
and some are finished before this
paper goes to press. We will have
as many of the results of today's
games as we receive over the
wire on the front page of today's
paper.
The Associated Press gets news
of what goes on in the east out
here pretty quick. On a direct
wire the stories and scores come
into Portland the instant a re
porter back east is tapping the
letters out on a teletype key
board. Then they're put on the
Oregon network and get down
here very soon afterward.
I think that any critics of this
arrangement will find, by look
ing through our files, that in the
"good old days before the war"
exactly the same system was
used with possibly more elabora
tion than the paper shortage to
day allows.
Softball Meet
Slated Tonight
A meeting of Softball enthus
iasts is to be held tonight in the
council rooms of the city hall,
beginning at 7:30, to determine
possibilities of the formation of
a Softball league in the county.
Team managers, players and
sponsors are asked to attend this
conference tonight. That includes
Softball backers from Merrill,
Malin, Tulelake, Chiloquin and
other towns in this area inter
ested in league competition.
Harold Hendrickson, who man
aged the successful Basin league
basketball loop last winter, will
conduct the Softball meeting.

26 UP) Maj. Earl G. Linehart
of Bethesda, Md., has specialized
in army discharges for the past
eight months. Alter handing
out 33,000 GI discharges, he got

16 Track Teams Entered
In Thinclad Invitational
Three more track teams have
returned entry blanks for the
big southern Oregon-northern
California invitational thinclad
event to be held in Modoc field
here Saturday afternoon.
Prineville, Bend and Weed aro
going to field teams in the meet,
which this year is sponsored by
the newly-reactivated 20-30 club.
Bend has a state pole vault
champion who will compote in
the aerial event against vaultcrs
from the sixteen schools already
entered in the tourney.
A perpetual trophy, donated
by the Lions club, goes to the
winner of the annual track meet
each year, and is now in the
hands of the Pelican cindcrmcn,
last year's champs.
Dusette Gets
Over Martino
Strongman Georges Dusetto
repeated his win handily over
Martino Angelo at the armory
last night, withstanding savage
onslaughts by the squat Italian,
and Martino will be called upon
to live up to his bargain by giv
ing Dusette a chance to win the
coast junior title.
Dusette punished the champ
with a crushing headlock through
the second round of their bout,
then clomped it on again for a
fall early in the third.
Angelo, who kept up a run
ning fire of Italian small talk
sounding like a balcony scene
by the late unlamented and re
cently dug-up 11 Duce all through
the fight, worked on Duscttes
brawnev left arm with stamping
hammeflocks in the fourth, then
negotiated a straight arm bar for
a tumble in the fifth.

for each event in tho afternoon
except the 100-yard dash, for
which eight will participate. The
finals start at 1 o'clock with the
pole vault, and the meet is sched
uled to end on the completion of
a half-mile relay.
