    Funds For
New Plant
Gathered
Funds for potato starch fac
tory construction in the Klamath
basin arc now being gathered by
five local banks. Money to be
held in escrow by the Klamath
Falls branch of the First Na
tional Bank of Portland is being
taken bv that bank, by the Unit
ed States National in Klamath
Falls, and by banks at Tulelake,
Merrill and Dorris. Banks other
than First National are acting
as agents for First National.
Escrow money is being taken
with the understanding that (100
shares of Northwest Chemurgy
Cooperative common stock will
be purchased provided a mini
mum of $100,000 total has been
gathered in escrow before June
1. Escrow money will not be
exchanged for stock until author
ized signature of Northwest
Chemurgy Cooperative officials
is affixed to an agreement to
build a starch factory in Klam
ath basin in 1946 and subsequent
ly in 1947, with additional stock
sale, to construct a glucose plant
at the same site capable of pro
cessing all starch produced here.
It is estimated that the pro
posed plants will process over
; 28,000 tons of cull potatoes an
nually and will produce 4200
tons of glucose currently val
ued at $840,000. Except for lim
ited stock feeding the basin's
cull crop is at present a total
loss.
To Cost $200,000
The finished starch - glucose
plant is expected to cost $200,
000. An estimated cost of $150,
000 is indicated for the starch
plant to be constructed in 1946.
Northwest Chemurgy Coopera
tive officials have indicated that
construction will be initiated
when growers here subscribe
$100,000 in stock.
It has been stated that con
struction of the starch plant
must start in May if the entire
1946 crop is to be processed. It
is planned to ship 1946 starch
to a glucose plant now building
at The Dalles.
Northwest Chemurgy Cooper
ative is operating plants at Lin
den, Ellensburg and Wenatchee,
Wash. The co-op first processed
atarch and glucose in 1943.
Growers here are being offered
common stock. Common stock is
voting stock. It is not assessable.
A six per cent dividend can be
paid on common stock. Divi

dends are not cumulative. Each
year's operation is a separate ac
counting period.
Stock is issued in multiples of
$100 only.
A suggested yardstick for stock
purchase was outlined by Klam
ath Potato Growers and Tulelake
growers committees and is based
on 1948 potato acreage. The sug
gested rate of purchase is $7.50
per acre of potatoes grown in
1946. Farmers not growing po
tatoes in 1946 are eligible to
buy stock.
It is pointed out that directors
can refuse to take culls from
non stock holders.
Northwest Chemurgy Co-op
has been paying $10 and more
per ton of culls at time of de
livery. Growers here place more em
phasis on value of the plant in
diversion of low grade potatoes
in low price years than on return
from culls processed in normal
times.
