Lots Tested
For Disease

SPOKANE, April 8 (IP) Pro
ducers of next season's huge
northwest potato crop already

ance policy against one of the
greatest mreais oi we uwusu;
parasitic disease.
In winter test plots at Ocean
side, Calif., the best potato seed
lots of western growers have
been checked for disease in a se
lective preview of 1946 potato
production.
Certified seed producers from
10 states, including Idaho, Utah,
Oregon and Washington, and
from British Columbia, sent
seed to the California plots.
Tubers from pre-tested lots were
planted last December. In Feb
ruary the plants were checked
for disease.
58 Discarded
Of the 405 Idaho lots of certi
fied stock, 58 were discarded
because they revealed too much
bacterial ringrot or other para
sitic disease. The remaining
lots had been classified thor
oughly. Summaries of the tests
to be distributed through coun
ty agents will give farmers a
complete case history of every
seed lot they buy. Growers
whose seed failed to meet re
quirements are able, under the
winter test plan, to replace the
aeiecuve lots oetore planting
time.
A program to supply tested po
tato seed is of major importance
to northwest farmers.- From
the famed "spud belt" in Idaho
through the potential potato
center of Washington's big Bend

northwest potato production is

economy.

Merger of School
Districts Approved
THE DALLES, April 8 ()
Merger of eight school districts
in southern Wasco county have
been approved for a Union high
school district- by the county
boundary board.
Consolidation will be effective
May 20 and involves high school
students now transported to
Maupin.
Horton Buys
Serruys Ranch
Sale of the William Serruys
ranch in Langell valley north of
Lorclla, to Lawrence Horton,
well known Klamath county
rancher, was made known this
past week.
The 1000-ncre ranch will be
used by Horton to raise pure
bred Hereford stock. The pur
chase price was in the neighbor
hood of $35,000.
Serruys operated the ranch
for some time but sold his pure
bred stock a year ago to Lee
Murphy of Point Reyes, Calif.
Ho then leased the ranch to Hor
ton for a year prior to the sale.
Registration Will
Close On April 16
Registration of voters for the
coming primary and general
elections will close at 5 p. m.,
April 16, but the county clerk's
office in the courthouse will re
main open in the evenings from
April 11 to April 15 inclusive to
take registrations.
This is being done to allow
persons who do not have an op
portunity to get to the court
house during regular business
hours.
Clerk Charles DeLap estimates
that there are over four thous
and eligible electors in the coun
ty who have not registered. Two
years ago, before the last presi
dential election, there were more
than 20,000 qualified voters in
Klamath county.
