    Ribbentrop Says Stalin
Condoned Nazi Invasion
tl it urTTWDMnJTPrt Anril 1 (IP)
. j Joachim von Ribbentrop, former
j ' I nazi foreign minister, testified
, , J before the international uuuw;
- ' irihnnnl today that Prime Min-
i I;; later Stalin agreed in Moscow
I ! , never accuse Germany of aggres
S' .sion because of her actions in
I Poland." .,
j ' The agreement was that II
I i ' : .oomtnn were sDoken of both
i parties would be guilty," Ribben
: trop said.
The accord, Ribbentrop con
J tinued, was reached August 21,
1 1939 less than two weeks be
ll fore the nazi march into Poland
V in the course of negotiations
1 for a Russian - German non-
E 1 '! aggression pact and a secret pro
t tocol for partitioning Poland,
5 M Finland and the Baltic states,
i --The testimony was given after
v) R. A. Rudenko. Soviet prosecu-
s 5 1 tnp nrntnsterl against admission
'f, of an affidavit by Freidrich Gaus,
ij former nazi foreign office nego
n tiator, relating to the alleged
rd aecret protocol.
"V Accusation
Rudenko accused the defense
( i; A- Jt..f Vn at.
M tention of the tribunal from real
issues" by dwelling on the re
ported Russian-German under
standing prior to the outbreak of
(I the war.
"I don t wish to speak about
this affidavit because I attach no
importance to it, he said, "but
we are not here to investigate
the Dolicy of the allied nations.
I'yWe are here to investigate
;'" charges against war criminals."
i : J- The tribunal decided, however,
j that the affidavit could be ad
1 ' i mitted as evidence and that Rib
i ! , 'I bentrop could testify on the
; ,1 matter.
Ribbentrop said that at the
i I time the alleged secret agree
ment was negotiated "there was
not the slightest doubt in the
minds of Hitler or Stalin that if
all negotiations with Poland
came to naught, territory taken
from our two countries by force
of arms would be reunited to
them by force of arms. In this
manner, the eastern boundaries
(of Poland) would be turned over
to the Soviet Union and the
western w
Price Too High
Nazi efforts to induce Russia
to join an axis three-power pact
failed, Ribbentrop said, because
the Soviet's price for signing was
too high.
Hp listed the Russian terms as:
1. A free hand In Finland, which "we
supposed would lead 10 me occupation
of Finland." . .
2, Close relations with Bulgaria, which
the "Bulgarian government did not
Wncertain rights in the Dardanelles,
which Mussolini opposed.
4. An outlet through the Baltic, which
would have brought up the quesUon of
the Skagerrak.
Longshoremen
Sign Contract
SEATTLE. April 1 (JP)
Washington Waterfront Employ
ers and the AFL-International
Longshoremen's association Sat
urday signed a new contract
agreement covering 900 long
shoremen in Tacoma, Anacortes
and Los Angeles.
It provides, for $1.38 an hour
straight time and $2.07 an hour
for overtime and eliminates a
former 10 cent hourly differen
tial between longshore dock and
ship workers.
The contract must be ap
proved by the wage stabilization
board. .
In announcing the agreement.
M. G. Ringenberg, Employers
association president, said the
nntrupt is similar to one rejected
by the ClO-Paclfic Coast Inter
national iiongsnorenicii a
Warehousemen's union.
It amounts to an hourly in
crease of 33 cents for dock work'
ers and 23 cents for those work
ing aboard ship, he said.
Wage Bil
To Hit N west
WASHINGTON, April 1 ()
No provisions of the minimum
waae bill will affect the Pacific
northwest, so far as Senator
Cordon (R-Ore.) can determine,
he told the senate.
He reported wages in Oregon
are higher "in every value than
the wages which would be pre
scribed by the pending bill."
Conditions in "some of the other
47 states," however, would be
affected, Cordon said.
A steady stream of labor from
farms to factories will result if
the 65 cents an hour is pre
scribed the minimum, as the bill
proposes, Cordon declared. This
would force the farmer and his
familv either to do the work
themselves or to pay higher
wages without higher prices for
products, he said.
Natural hot water from many
of Iceland's volcanic springs is
piped to provide heat for office
buildings, homes and public
swimming pools.
More than one-seventh of Mex
ico is forested.
