field, 31, serving life for murder

Manning, 25, serving a second
sentence for burglary in Clacka
mus county, and Charles
Uroedcn, 34, sentenced for bur
glary in Multnomah county.
Brumficld and Manning
sawed their cell bars and es
caped over the wall in a fog on
February 14. They were recap
tured two weeks ago by Denver
police.
Brecden, a trusty at the prison
farm, wulked off last December
27, and was rccupturcd in Idaho.

Manning denied committing any

the draft law must be extended
if the army is to get tho 600.000
men it nees in tne next 12
months.
Major General Hershey esti
mated that the army requires
about 50,000 men monthly but
can obtain only one-fifth of that
number through enlistments if
the selective service law is per
mitted to lapse on May 15.
He was the first witness as
the senate military affairs com
mittee began two weeks of pub
lic hearings, decided upon after
the committee deadlocked 8-8 on
the administration's request for
a year's extension of the draft.
