iUshop Says Catholie Church
I hvvat To llvlitjious Freedom
HOSTON, March 28 (!)
Methodist Hishop G. Bromley
Oxnam, president of the Feder
al Council of Churches of Christ
In the United States, has accused
the Itoman Catholic church in
America of constituting a "grave
threat both lo political and re
ligious freedom."
Speaking last night at an ecu
menical service in Trinity
church In which ministers of all
Protestant denominations par
ticipated, Bishop Oxnam said
that "pressures on newspapers,
radio and other sources of pub
lic information, together with
political activities . . . give prot
estants grave concern."
A spokesman for Ihe Roman
Catholic church In Boston de
clined comment on the prot
estant leader's assertions.
"When a protestanl speaks of
the abuse of privilege by Ihe
hierarchy, he Is Immediately pro
trayed as attacking the church,"
llishnp Oxnam said.
"This is not true. He stands
ready to protect the religious lib
erty of the Homiin Catholic
church but he stands likewise
ready to resist those practices
imii ore political and designed
iu secure secular privilege,
"When Harold J. Laski (Brit
ish labonte) wus attacked be
cause he criticized the Vatican's
altitude toward Franco Spain,
efforts were made to keep his
speech off the radio," the bishop
tisserico.
"Others who participated in
mc meeting were threatened,
he said.
"It was left to Americans who
are Homan Catholics to ooint out
that the pope who is a king as
wen as a Head ol a church is
subject to criticism for his polili-
cui ucuvuics just as any ruler,
and that such criticism is not an
attack on the church.
"All we usk is that the Roman
Catholic church in matters of re
ligious liberty do unto others as
it would be done by," Bishop
Oxnam declared.
