Three Cities Bid
For Prep Tourney
PORTLAND, March 23 (P)
The board of control of the Ore
gon high school activities asso
ciation will meet here tomorrow
to consider three cities' bids for
the 1047 state prep basketball
tournament.
Both Astoria and Eugene have
asked lo host the tourney tradi
tionally held in Salem. Salem
wants It, too, and has proposed
that it be transferred from the
too-small Willamette university
gym to the state fairgrounds
horse show arena.

KANSAS CITY, March 23 (IP) The Pacific coast champion
California Bears tonight will attempt to disrupt the plans of bas
ketball's amazing tall boy, 7-foot Bob Kurland, and the Okla
homa A. and M. Aggies for a second straight NCAA cage crown.
Coach Nib Price's Californians advanced to the finals of the
western regional play-off here last night in defeating Colorado
university's Buffaloes, 50 to 44, while the Kurland caravan mas
tered Baylor university, 44 to 29.
The winner of the California-Oklahoma A. and M. fracas will
meet the eastern representative (Ohio State or North Carolina)
in New York for the national title next Tuesday.
The Aggies won their first round game much as they pleased
with Kurland plunking in seven field goals and six gratis tosses
for 20 points to bring his total for 31 games to 591, only four
points shy of the national pro--

Willamette Talked
PORTLAND, March 23 ()
Closure of the Willamette river
to. sports fishing two days each
week as a conservation measure
was recommended today by the
Portland chapter, Izaak Walton
league.
A resolution approved by the
league said the river's salmon
runs are "nearing the pojnt of
extinction." The league also
asked the bagflimit be reduced
from three to one salmon a day.

had increased from an average

worth in game reconnaissance
but some ground work still must
be done, the state game commis
sion .reported, today. , .
Accurate counts 'of deer, and
elk have been made Tecently

a count of 2207 deer in a flight
over Murderers creek winter
range compared with a ground
estimate last year of 2400.
The commission said it had

past year for coyote control and
