Denies Appeal
SALEM, March 10 (TP) Tho
stale supreme court today dis
missed the appeal of Maley
Stone, who was sentenced in
Polk county lo a life prison
term as an hablluul criminal.
The grounds for the dismis
sal, requested by tho Polk coun
ty district attorney, were that
Stone's attorney, Lcroy Lomax,
failed to file the transcript of
the lower court with the state
supremo court within the time
prescribed by law.
Stone also was convicted of
the Grande Ronde bank rob
bery two years ago.
Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Blow
of Olympla, Wash., are visiting
Mrs. E. G. Grovcr and Mrs. J.
Paul Keycs, mother and sister of
Mrs. Blow. Mrs. Grovor has been
seriously ill but is now much

At a recent conference in Port
land which was attended by

fact that is rather pertinent for
senior boys was revealed. The
conference was held for the pur
pose oi discussing accreditation
of military service experiences.
It was mostly concerned with
questions about boys already in
me service, bul the service prob'
lem for senior bovs was also
discussed.
It was brought out that those
boys wishing to join the navy
may do so at any time before the
coll of the selcctlvo service even
if they have passed their 18th
birthday. This means of course
that boys need not rush their
schooling and leave before their
graduation simply because they
arc afraid they will not be able
to Join the navy after they are 18.
TAC Without Music
The Tccn-uge club has been
without music facilities for the
past week. The juke box which
was formerly in the club was on
a loan basis only and has been
taken back. The TAC student
committee Is planning to buy a
juke box and it is hoped that it
will be in by tomorrow night.

Many Chicago landlords, with
no apartments to rent, can't find
"no vacancy" signs to post on
their buildings.
James Dameron. owner of a
sign firm, said during the war
manufacture of all metal signs
dropped sharply and sign sellers
kept only small stocks of "no
vacancy" signs on hand. Be
fore the war the big demand
was for "for rent" signs which
are selling at half-price.
Dameron said his firm turns
out 6000 "no vacancy" signs
weekly, but most of them are
shipped to other cities.
Bids To Be Opened
For Ferry Contract
SALEM, March 19 (IP) The
slate highway commission an
nounced today it would open
bids in Portland April 4 for
operation of the Astoria-Megler
ferry across the. Columbia river.
The contract would be award-
ed for 16-hour daily service with
two boats in the summer and
one in the winter.

Several similar changes in
ranger district size are being
made this year on other national
forests and this realignment fol
lows forest service policy of get
ting more intensive management
on national forest lands.
Before coming to Bly in 1943
Smith had several years' experi
ence on the Umpqua national
forest in various jobs including
timber sale officer, district guard
and fire guard positions. He plans
to move his family to Lakeview
as soon as suitable housing is
available. The office for the
Drews Valley district will be in
conjunction with that for the
Warner district on the second
floor of the post office building.
Dunn Appointed
To Green Post
PORTLAND, March 19 (IP)
Paul M. Dunn, dean of the Ore
gon State college forestry
school, has been named vice
president and executive chair
man of the Keen Oregon Green
association.
The board of trustees yester
day chose Charles Ogle, Salem,
as secretary and manager, and
Carl Horsey, Portland, treas
urer, at the first meeting this
year. Dunn succeeds Edmund
Hayes, chairman since 1940.
The trustees announced Gov.
Snell would name a smaller ex
ecutive committee from the 14
man board to direct the group's
fire" prevention campaign in
1946. .
