SALEM, March 10 (P) Tho speedy Washington Colonials of
Portland will bo cunning for repeat on the state basketball
crown tonight as they tanglo with the plucky, persistent Eugene
Axemen,

from behind to victories seconds ahead of last night's semi-final
gun. Eugene, tagging until the final 60 seconds, literally slipped
one over on the Medford Tornado and stopped the big breeze,
33-32. Washington met tough opposition In Central Catholic, a
fellow city quintet, but managed to rescue Us reputation in the
last minute, 20 seconds, 30-36.
Washington's Bob Lavey, hotshot guard and the only 1948
all-stater In the tourney, sank a long field goal and a neat gift
toss to win tho gume. His team.

He is reported to be in a very

little chance that he will ever
take the mat again.

Katonen underrated the knee
wrench that kept him from
taking his spot in- the main go
Thursday night. He's had trouble
with his knee cartilage before
and expected the limb would be
ready for use Thursday, but is
now under doctor's orders to stay
out for a while.
Watch These Boys
Mills school currently has the
most promising group of young
athletes in town and one of the
objectives of the city's planned
athletic campaign is to see that
just such youngsters as these
some day reach Pelican varsity
teams.
Mills won the grade school
basketball championship just as
handily as almost the same kids
won the grade school football
title last fall.
Prominent on Coach Howard
Hicks' starting quintet were Gay
nor Huck and Jerry Liable,
guard and center, who - were
strictly excellent in the backf ield
of the Mills touch football squad.
Also starting on the basketball
team were Alfredo Herrera and
Ronnie Dimmick, starters on the
gridiron.
The other lad of the cage
squad first string, Bob Hafar,
who was high scorer in all of
Mills' contests in. the tourney,
we don't recall as a member of
the football eleven, but he might
have been.

his basketball learn.
Today the bespectacled, six
foot, nine inch DePaul uni
versity law student became
the highest paid player in pro
fessional basketball hiilory,
after he signed a contract for
$60,000 to play five years for
the Chicago American Bears
of the National Basketball
league.
That figures out at 1353 a
game, on the basis of $12,000
a year and a 34-game sched
ule, such as the league played
the past season not bad for a
22-year-old youth- . who will
continue his law studies while
the checks are coming In.

PORTLAND, March 16 (jP)
The state game and fish commis
sions announced today plans for
a survey to determine the num
ber of salmon caught by sports
men in the Willamette river this
spring.
A check will be made at moor
ages and among boats In the
river, with Chris Jense, game
commission biologist, and Don
McKernan, fish commission bi
ologist, in charge.
The question of the extent of
sports catches came up after the
fish commission requested a par
tial closure of the Willamette to
allow more fish salmon to escape
upstream.
The eame commission also an
nounced that smelt 'licenses
would not be issued until the
Sandy run starts. The run comes
in March or April, but some
years fails to materialize.
