A republican party leader came
out of the west today with the
political prophecy that his party
will pick up a minimum of 40
house seats in the November
elections.
The republicans need a net

Wilson River highway, between
Portland and Tillamook, was
closed today by a slide a half

ceived a letter from him from a
German prison camp. It arrived
a year and two days after it was
written and six months after
Schleppergrell had enrolled in
the University of Minnesota.

west coast, is John Danaher,
former senator from Connecticut
and now $20,000-a-year congres
sional aide to the republican na
tional committee. He expressed
his opinions in an interview.
Danaher visited six states
Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Cali
fornia, Utah and Arizona. He
said he talked to public and pri
vate meetings of party workers,
business men, labor and farm
organization representatives and
civic leaders.

His claim of 40 overturns of
democratic seats applied to the
nation. But he said party mem
bers told him the GOP would
gain a minimum of 10 seats in
California and three in Wash
ington. . Danaher said California repub
licans "expect to re-elect Sena
tor Knowland" and Washington
republicans "expect to beat" Sen
ator Mitchell, democrat, with
Harry P. Cain, former mayor of
Tacoma. Cain was defeated for
the senate in 1944 by Senator
Magnuson, democrat. Cain was
serving in the army In England
at the time.
Danaher also said his inform
ants told him the republicans
had a "good chance" of captur
ing the seat of Senator McFar
land (D-Ariz.) and a house mem
bership from that state.
Reds Arrest 2 For
Attack On Diplomat
MOSCOW. March 13 UP) The
United States embassy said last
night it had been advised by the
Russian foreign office that
Soviet officials had arrested two
of a group of persons who par
ticipated in an attack on U. S.
Vice Consul William E. Wallace
on March 3.
The embassy said the Rus
sians reported an investigation
was continuing.
Wallace, a native of h-mia-
delphia and a resident of Prov
idence, R. I., previously had
been reported slightly injured.

McCloud Helps
Set Up Lodge
MERRILL. March 13 Mr.
and Mrs. Tom McCloud, Port-
lano, in Aierrill tor the institu
tion of the new oncamomcnt
lodge recently were guests of
the Rebekahs during their last
regular meeting. McCloud is
grand high priest of the grand
encampment, jurisdiction of Ore
gon, and assisted with the in
stitution. Rebekahs served a 7 o'clock
dinner to 135 guests and a "mid
night snack" when the evening
session was over. Gold and pur-
pie, encampment colors, carried
out with violets and acacia, were
used on the lone tables. Mrs.
Roy McNeill was general chairman.
Several articles that can bo
used for the carnival planned
b: the Rebekah lodge for next
fall have been donated by Mr.
and Mrs. R. E. Bailey, members
who are leaving . Merrill. . Mrs.
Esther Johnson also presented
the lodge with a doll to be used
in lodge work.
The birthday committee head
ed by Mrs. H. O. Cox served re
freshments at the last meeting.
State Income Tax
Auditor To Be Here
The state income tax auditor
will be in Klamath Falls at the
courthouse from March 18 to
March 30 to assist wage-earners
in filing their state income tax
returns for 1945.
The auditor will hold office
hours from 8:30 a. m. until 5
o'clock, March 18-22 inclusive;
8:30 until 12 noon March 23 and
30, and 8:30 until 5 o'clock
March 25 to 29. I

Program To
Be Delayed
SALEM, March 13 The
$10,000,000 building program f in
state institutions will be delayed
for about three months because
of action yesterday by tho stale
emergency board, which feels
that building costs might be re

The board of control had esti
mated the cost at $325,000, but
the low bid was $511,030.
The board of control in about
three months will advertise for
new bids.

The vote on whether to begin
construction immediately was 5
to 5, with the three board of
control members and two emer
gency board members wanting
to build, now, and five emer
gency board members wanting
to wait three months.
Governor Earl Snell said ho
believed it would be a long time
before building costs drop, and
that the need for new institu
tion buildings is so great thnt
construction should start now.
Voting to build immediately
were Governor Earl Snell; State
Treasurer Leslie M. Scott, Sec
retary of State Robert S. Fnr
rell Jr.; President of the Senato
Howard C. Bclton, Canby; and
Rep. Stanhope S. Pier, Portland.
Those , voting to wait three
months were Sen. Dean H.
Walker, Independence; Sen.

Speaker of the House "Eugene E.
