Ash Wednesday Opens Lent
Today in Ash Wednesday,
the first duy of Lent.
II was preceded by Shrovo
Tuesday, of old a special day
for people to confess their sins
und bo "shriven." II was also
ii duy marked us a final fling
of feasting and merriment be
foro tho 40 days of the Lenten
season In stricter times, eggs
und milk were eliminated from
the Lenten diet which prob
ably accounted for a last gorg
ing of pancakes on Shrove
Tuesday and may have some
thing to do with a passion for
eggs on Easter Day when tho
prohibition was lifted.
Ash, Wednesday and the re
mainder of the season make
up the 40 days of Lent. Forty
days Moses had remained up
in the mount nl Sinai. Forty
days our Lord had spent in
the wilderness, and 40 hours
His body had been laid away
In the tomb. The number
had a mystical significance.
Forty days of self-denial be
fore Easter was readily accept
able to Christian sentiment.
But Sunday was always a feast
day.
Therefore, the season of
Lent as finally settled covered
40 days exclusive of Sundays,
or a total duration of 40 days,
making the beginning of the
season fall on a Wednesday.
The penitential spirit Is
strongly expressed through
out Lent. According to an
old custom, people received a
mark of ashes on their fore
heads on the first day of the
season, the ashes being made
from the burning of palms.
Latin name for the Lenten
season is Quadragesima, mean
ing 40th day, which has been
corrupted in French to Careme
and In Spanish to Cuaresma.
In English the old Anglo
Saxon word lencten was adopt
ed. It merely meant "spring"
and became shortened to Lent.
The date of Easter deter
mines when the dates of Lent
shall fall and they vary from
year to year. This year Easter
falls on Sunday, April 21. Jt
is celebrated by all churches
In Christendom with pageant
and song, altars decked in
white, symbol of joy, thanks
giving and victory.
