The University of Idaho basket.
ball team and the Palousc Hills
hereabouts had a lot in common
today they re both still rolling
and one is about as hard to get
over as the other.
Orecon's defending northern
division basketball champions
knew all about it after bowing
to the league-leading Vandals
last night, 50 to 46, and if there's
anything in this legend about the
mountain coming to Mahomet
they'd like to make the guy's ac
quaintance before bumping into
ldalio again tonignt.
It's enough to drive a high'
geared, speedlined basketball
team to clipping paper dolls, the
way this Idaho outfit plays like
picking up basketball titles was
as easy as scrapping a raw po
tato. This in spite of the fact
only one of the starting Idahoans
Fred Quinn was even born
yet when the. Vandals won their
last noop title us years ago.
Of course. ' the thine isn't in
the bag. Oregon, smarting under
the sting of three straight aeieais
on its current western junket.
would delight in cutting the bot
tom out of the bag this evening.
Another win for Idaho would as
sure it of at least a tie for the
championship. Coach Babe
Brown's take-it-easy boys played
see-saw with Oregon through the
first half last night, took a 29-27
edge at the midway spot and
ruled the play for the rest of the
route.
The visiting Webfoots knotted
the situation once, at 35-35, but
angular Jack Phoenix served no
tice that such foolery wouldn't
be tolerated by scoring five
quick Idaho points.
Oregon shaved the margin to
two points at 48-46. but Idaho
went into a stall with five min
utes remaining and when Idaho
stalls, the enemy might as well
use the time to count its end of
the gate.
The only Webfoot bright spot
was the scoring of Dick Wilkins.
who bundled 15 points into the
netting and hopped from seventh
to fourth place in the league
standings with a season's total of
155.

(P) Tacked on the wall of the
Philadelphia Nationals' club
house here is a large cartoon of
a ball player with a "P" on his
shirt coming blinkingly out of an
old-fashioned cellar, a bat over
his shoulder and a bemused ex

It was drawn especially for
the Phillies by the well-known
sports cartoonist, Willard Mul'

the face of every score card sold
in the club's home parK this sea

instance on record of a ball club
poking fun at its own infirmities.
but it also sums up graphically
what Manager Ben Chapman has
to say.

Ortiz KOs
Castillo
At Frisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 26 0P)
Fiery-eyed Manuel Ortiz, defend
ing his bantamweight champion
ship of the world for the 13th
time, knocked out Louis Castillo,
Mexican challenger, in the 13th
round last night after punishing
him mercilessly most of the way.
The plucky 24-year-old chal
lenger, who did most of his fight
ing in the third and fourth
rounds and then took the cham
pion's fusilade of punches with
only occasional retaliation, took
the count on one knee. Ortiz
weighted 1171, Castillo 1171.
From the fifth round Ortiz
practically commanded the ring,
and in the 12th he hacked the
Mexican to his knees. Castillo
came back almost blinded in the
next round and went down on a
right punch to the body in one
minute 31 seconds.
Ortiz, 29, came out of the suc
cessful defense of the title he
won from Lou Sallca in 1942
with scarcely a sign of a tussle.
