Turf Strike
By FRANK FRAWLEY
ARCADIA, Calif., Feb 21 (IF)
With its two $100,000 races, the
Derby and the Handicap, coming
up within two weeks, Santa
Anita racetrack today was faced
with a strike threat that could
conceivably close down the
plant.
A group of owners and train
ers informed Santa Anita offi
cials yesterday that it would not
enter its horses in any more
races unless the Los Angeles
Turf club, conducting the 55-day
meeting, paid grooms and exer
cise boys and agreed to run races
when only six horses are en
tered. The group, organized as the
California Thoroughbred Owners
and Trainers association, wants
the track, which is setting new
betting records this season, to
Cay the grooms and exercise
oys, instead of the money com
ing from the purses of owners
and trainers.
The association claims to rep
resent 75 per cent of the owners
and trainers at Santa Anita. Karl
Becker, field secretary, said the
owners had agreed not to enter
their horses today for Friday's
races. Ho said grooms would not
lead horses to the saddling pad
dock tliis afternoon.
Penguins can progress either
by walking upright or flat on
their stomachs, kicking with
their legs.
