NEW YORK, Feb. 1 (JP
When a committee from the Col
lege Baseball Coaches associa
tion meets a major league group
Sunday to consider "premature '
signing of college players, it
might be a good idea for them
to offer a concrete plan. . . .
From what Commissioner Happy
Chandler said about signing high
ichool players before that was
ruled out recently, we figure
his stand will be that it's okay
for clubs to grab college boys at
any time. ...
As long as a boy or his parents
lign a contract and there is no
evidence or misrepresentation,
the commissioner can't do any
thing but approve the contract,
Chandler explained . . . and he
wants better evidence than some
body's word that there was mis
representation. . . . Contracts ap
parently mean a lot to Happy.
FIVE FOR THE BOOKS
When spherical Steve Owen of
the football Giants heard that
Tulane U. was staging a $5,000,
000 endowment fund campaign,
he handed Publicitor Horace
Renegar a check for five bucks.
. . . Renegar reminded him that
the campaign is for additional
general education endowment. . .
"That's all right, Horace," Steve
replied. "I'm all for seeing stu
dents educated, too."
SHORTS AND SHELLS
George Halas, the Chicago
Bears' boss, had an operation on
his eyes last week the result of
long hours in the glaring sun and
under the improvised lights of
Pacific navy bases also of try
ing not to see the conference. . .
Gerry Karver, who'll return to
Penn State in time for the cross
country season next fall, ran
gainst France's Marcel Han
tenne as a GI in Europe but
didn't finish.
From what he saw from far
astern, Karver doesn't figure
Hansenne can beat Les Mac
Mitchell indoors. ... Buddy
Young, the Fleet City fleetfoot, is
due to make his final appearance
of the football season along with
a flock of other service stars in
a charity game at Sacramento,
Calif., Sunday. . . . Arkansas, the
Southwest conference basketball
favorite, can win or lose the
title in the next eight days when
it plays six big games.

Cincinnati may be the most ac
tive team on the mid-winter play
er mart with its catching staff
of Ray Mueller, Al Lakeman and
Ray Lamanno as bait for outfield
talent and a third baseman.
While the St. Louis Cardinals,
with their 25-man pitching staff,
has drawn most of the attention
of the talent buyers, there were
indications that Sam Breadon
would go slow on unloading be
fore the end of spring training.
General Manager Warren Giles
of the Reds, here for the sched
uled meetings opening today, re
vealed he was interested in Out
fielder Buster -Adams of the
Cards, Ron Northey of the Phil
lies or Jim Russell of Pittsburgh
but held out most hope for a
swap with the Red Birds.

Only one bout Is definite for
next Tuesday night's rassling

the Pete Belcastro-Buck Lynam

Pete and Brutal Jack will

the victor goes home with a

Belcastro already holds one

MAIMED ATHLETE IS HONORED
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 1 (IP)
A soft-spoken young man named
Meryll Frost scarred and
maimed in a plane crash was
awarded the honor of "most
courageous athlete of 1945" by
the Philadelphia Sports Writers
association.
The 24-year-old ex-GI Dart
mouth college football star
stood silently in the spotlight be
fore the 1200 gathered at the as
sociation's 42nd annual banquet
last night and said with a quiet
eloquence:
"I've never had the opportun
ity to say this publicly, but 1
want to say it now. You've often
heard the saying: 'Behind every
great man there is a woman.'
Now, I don't pretend to be great,
but there was a woman my
wife." (She is the former Pauline
McKenzie of Beverly, Mass.)
Frost was burned seriously in
the crash of an army bomber in
Italy in 1S43. He spent 18 months
in hospitals. He was given 15
pints of blood plasma. He had
six operations. Ears, eyebrows
and skin were grafted to replace
what he had lost.
Byron Nelson, the nation's
number one golfer, was given in
absentia the Sports 'Writers'
award of the outstanding athlete
of the year.
The banquet had a "victory"
theme and Hank Greenberg add
ed to it.
"Don't expect every returned
veteran to be as good as he was
before the war," the Detroit
slugger said. "They were in a
war," and he added smiling,
"they'll be in a different kind of
war next season."
