Watts cited these figures in his
innual report on the condition
if the country'a forests: .
Lumber cut in Pennsylvania,

ily, has dropped to one per cent

The output of lumber In the
rike states, which formerly pro
uced 8,800,000,000 board feet
mnually, did not get above 1,
150,000,000 feet under wartime
pressure.
In Virginia, lumber output has
leclined to one-half of the 1910
production.
"Even more revealing, said
Watts, "is the mounting evidence

Toastmasters
Initiate two
Two new members were "in
stalled at the Toastmasters week
ly dinner and- meeting Wednes
day evening at the Willard hotel.
They were Vic- Leach, of Rose
Motor company, and Hugh Estes
of Balsiger Motor company. The
installation speech was given by
Toastmaster Floyd Clark. There
were four guests present at the
meeting. William Sterling of
Pittsburgh. Pa.. Warren Bennet,
Gomer Jones and Ted Hansen
of Klamath Falls. Hansen pre
sented his application for mem
bership.
John Schroeder was toast-
master of the evening and Paul
Lee was topic master with a 15-
mtnute program of lame
. Topics." There were two 10-
minute speeches by George Con
ner and George Kunzman. also
four five-minute speeches by Mel
Henry, Floyd Clark, Glenn In
man and W. L. Bullard. F. O.
Weaver was general critic for
thfr evening. George Conner re
corded the speeches;.

Turtle Track
Runs Nightly
At Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS," Nev- A new
wagering sport turtle racing
was introduced in Las Vegas this
week.
The betting parlors, where
race fans bet horses at leading
tracks throughout the country by
day, become paddocks and race
courses for terrapin by night. .
The sport' was introduced by
the International JFoofcprinters,
Las Vegas-chapter, to raise funds
for charity. Proceeds ; are con
tributed to' the children's play
ground fund and for building a
clubhouse for airplane modeling
enthusiasts.
Some 200 turtles participate in
15 nightly races. Wagering is on
a pari-mutuel basis.
Although the "mounts", com
pete with characteristic Aesopian
lethargy, a winner is figured to
cross the, finish line every. 15
minutes. A temperamental com
petitor may advance within a
few inches of victory then pull
a Br'r rabbit, taking time out for
a nap while some more energetic
rival slides on to victory.
The race course accommodates
10 entries. Each turtle is in a
glass enclosed lane. Odds are
posted prior to post time. En
fries are named after sponsors,
most of whom are Las Vegas citi
zens, including Nevada's mem
bers of congress, radio - stars
Lum 'n Abner, cowboy star Roy
Sogers, and others.

3000 Army Men Will
Sail For Seattle
YOKOHAMA, Jan. 24 WW
Nearly 3000 army officers and
men will sail within the next two
days for Seattle aboard the ships
Milford Victory and CCNY Vic
tory. The Milford Victory will sail
tomorrow with 1318 enlisted
men and 145 officers, and the
CCNY Victory leaves Saturday
with 1497 enlisted men and 35
officers.
