Canner Gauges
Need Testing
Many a homcmakcr who dis
covered that tho gauge on her
pressure canner was not func
tioning properly at the height
of the canning season will
profit by last year's mistakes
and bring the gauge to the
county homo extension service
to bo tested in Junuury or
February, according to Mrs.
Wlnnlfrcd K. Gillcn, county
homo demonstration agent.
Pressure canner gauges and
valves may bo entrusted to the
home demonstration agent's of
fice for testing, says Mrs. Gil
len, because they aro sent to
the Oregon State college foods
industries department for ex
pert checking, to sec that they
aro in perfect working order.
A nominal charge is made for
the testing service, and the in
strument is returned with the
correction lettered on a tag at
tached to the gauge. Gauges
and valves should be brought
to room 208, Federal building,
or mailed directly to the foods
Industries department, Oregon
State college, Corvallis. The
complete Instrument should bo
removed from the lid of tho
pressure canner, Mrs. Glllen ex
plained, and, if mailed, should
be carefully protected with
packing material. It Is essential
that all gauges be checked bo
fore each canning season, if the
homemoker Is to guard against
food spoilage. Testing of the
valve is optional, depending on
whether it seems to be function
ing properly,
