Government
Of Austria
Recognized
WASHINGTON, Jan. 7 M')
The United Stairs formally rec
ognized the government of Auit'
trla today and expressed hope
that the first nation engulfed by
nar.l Germany soon would
nehlevo democracy and complete
independence,
Russia, Britain and France
joined this country in granting
recognition to the Vienna re
gime headed by Chancellor Leo
pold Flgl and President Karl
Rentier. The recognition does
not affect the authority of the
allied council, which wilt con
tinue to carry out "allied objec
tives in Austria."
These objectives, the simul
taneous aniHitini'cment said, In
clude "eliminating nail influ
ence and Institutions In Austria,
mid assisting In the reconstruc
tion of democratic life."
As they aro achieved, the
statement added, it Is hoped that
"a large-scalo reduction may bo
made in tlio number of occupa
tion troops of tlie four states
(U. S Russia, Britain, France),
and that Austria may progres
sively acquire the status of un
independent slate."
Mouaga
The recognition announce
ment Included tlio text of a mes
sage froiii President Truninn to
Dr. Rentier. It said:
"I wish to extend to you my
sincere congratulations on your
election as president of tlio Aus
trian republic and my best wish
es in your task of completing
the liberation of Austria and the
revival of ail Independent and
democratic state.
"I can assure you thot the peo
ple of the United States will
wisli to assiM Austria in tills en
deavor." Gen. Mark W. Clark, former
commander of the U. S. 5th
army and tlio 15th army group
In Italy, is American represen
tative on the allied council
which recommended recognition
in a resolution last month.
Recognition of Austria left
only Romania and Bulgaria
among former enemy Balkan
and Danube states still unrecog
nized by the United States. This
government previously recog
nized new governments of Hun
gary, a former axis satellite, and
Yugoslavia, which never desert
ed the allied cause although
overrun by German forces in
1941.
