Bureau Eyes
Rate Action
The Klumath Basin Rates bu
reau is watching with particu
lar interest the actions taken by
the Intercoastal Water Carriers
In Issuing new and increased
rates through permission grant
ed by the Interstate Commerce
Commission, Paul Taylor, man
ager of tho bureau, disclosed to
day. The Increase In rates is ex
pected sometime in mid-Januarv.
Taylor said. j
"The rates from Portland and
San Francisco to Klamath Falls!
arc largely based on these water
compelled competitive rates
which have a very controlling
effect on all rates to and from
this area," he stated.
The effect of the ruling, ac
cording to the weekly newslet
ter of the Portland chamber of
commerce, Is to compel the rail
roads to increase their rates in
the corresponding manner that
competitive water rates are in
creased unless the advance means
upsetting the present fixed water-rail
differential.
