    36 Officials At Notorious Dachau
Camp Sentenced To Die On Gallows
By DON DOANE
' DACHAU, Dec. 13 (IP) A
U. S. military court today sen
tenced 36 officials and guards at
the notorious Dachau concentra
tion camp to death by hanging
for the murder, torture and star
vation ' of thousands of the
camp's-inmates.
Another defendant was sen
tenced to life imprisonment and
three others were sentenced to
terms of 10 years each.
The 40 defendants were con
victed yesterday by the military
tribunal, which debated only 90
minutes before bringing in its
verdict. Among those convicted
were five camD doctors and
three prisoners who had colla
borated with the SS.
' : Witnesses at the trial said that
' SOOO Jews were killed at Dach
au, that inmates were brutally
' beaten, that naked men were im
mersed in ice water for experi
ments and that some men were
sent to the crematory while still
alive,'
Most Feared .
. The camp was the most no
torious and most feared of the
: concentration camps set up by
' the nazis for political prisoners.
The men who operated the
horror camp received their sen-
tences calmly for the most part,
only a few showing any change
.' of expression.
The life sentence went to
Peter Betz, a guard, against
whom there was little evidence
of personal cruelty. Ten-year
terms were given Hugo Laustcr
er, who was said by witnesses to
have been kind to prisoners; Al
bin Gretsch, who was drafted in
to the SS and against whom no
personal accusations of cruelty
were made, and Johann Schocpp,
who was drafted from the Ro
manian army by the SS and as
signed to guard the Dachau
tower.
Doctor to Die
Dr. Klaus Karl Schilling, 74,
who killed many prisoners in ex
periments through which he
sought a malaria vaccine, and SS
Officer Mertin Weiss, comman
dant of the camp, were among
the 36 sentenced to die.
Schilling, who last week
begged the court for time to
complete his experimental rec
ords, blinked his eyes rapidly
and bowed his bearded head
when he heard the words:
"Death by Hanging."
Among those sentenced to die
were Leonhard Eichberger and
Sylvester Filleboeck, SS guards
accused specifically by partici
pating in the execution of 95
captive Russian officers, Johann
Kick, in whose office nails were
reported torn from the toes and
fingers of captives during inter
rogation, and iTanz iioettger.

Shoe Prices Not
To fie Increased
WASHINGTON, Dec. 13 (IP)
OPA said today there will be
no increase in prices the public
Says for shoes despite a price
ike granted to manufacturers.
The agency ruled that a 41
per cent producer's increase to
go into effect soon must be ab
sorbed by retailers and whole
salers. OPA asserted that under this
plan, dealers would still make
"considerably more" than their
peacetime profit.
As for retailers, the agency
said their current profits are 7.6
per cent, or 6.1 percentage
points higher than in 1936-39.

Beauty Shops To ''
Close On Dec. 24
IDEAL days for Christmas to
come on are Saturdays and
Mondays ... in my estima
tion ... but the 25th isn't
that accommodating this
year.
So Klamath's Association of
Beauty Shop Owners and Oper
ators is doing something about
'. it by closing on Monday . . .
December 24th . . . for an ex
tra holiday.
This means one day less
available for us to have our
; new permanents and fresh hair
dos ... to be all glamored up
; for the festivities ...
And it means if you haven't
made your appointment yet . . ;
you'd better get a call in to
your favorite beauty shop . . .
or there won't be a vacant min
ute left.:
Shopping Flurry
On At LaPointe's
SUCH a flurry of shopping at
LaPOINTE'S this week, it
quite took my breath away
... as also did the display
at , the jewerly counter
where I got stranded.
A shipment of solid sterling
creations just in-from New
York . . . pins and earrings ex
traordinarily bizarre in shape
. . . gold plated and inset with
stones . . . was getting most of
the attention, and I couldn't
help thinking how dramatic one
of these sets would be with a
plain black outfit!
Being interested in the deco
rative combs . . . Mae Phillips
showed me some stunning pairs
enhanced by pearls, jewels or
sparkly beads shaped into bows
that would certainly lend glit
ter to your holiday hair-do.
Fact of the matter is, La
Pointe's has such a wide selec
tion of costume jewelry this sea
son . . . earrings from $1.20 up,
choker3, bracelets, pins . . .
ranging from the moderate to
the extravagant . . . that I
couldn't even descriptively do
them justice ... but there are
some other gift items in the
jewelry section that are luring
me back on another shopping
trip to LaPOINTE'S ... 507
Main ... so I'll tell you more
on Saturday ...
Long's Receives ,
New Nubby Knits
jtOUB school miss never has

W from the talk that goes

JL Martha knows some sweater-wise
mothers are going
to be extra pleased to hear
about the new NUBBY KNITS
at Long's . . . especially right
here at Christmastime.
These are Alberic all-wool or
iginals ... in boxy type cardi
gans and pullovers . . . with
hand-fashioned sleeves that
make them fit extra well over
the shoulders.
' Identical shades are available
in both 'styles of this sweater
... Sandringham green, petal
pink, maize, melon, three blues,
dark green . . and white
and are so lovely I don't see
how you'll get by with less
than two. Sizes are from 34
through 40 . . .

Currin's Perfumes
Holiday Mleminders
jURRIN'S was showing three
II new Hartnell perfumes
I when Martha dropped in to
I I the drug store the other
J day on a gift shopping ex
pedition. Even the names had a Yule
tide flavor . . , "Gay Glitter,"
light and blithe . . . "Bright
Star," a soft, flowery scent . . .
and "Stolen Heaven," a haunt
ing fragrance.
Purse size flacons of these
perfumes are priced at .$5.00
. . . the regular packaged sizes
at $18.50 (both plus tax).
However, the toilet waters

during perfume scents . . . are
only $2.75 and '$5.00 . . .

Fern Short told Martha . . .

Time's a-flittin' . . . and if
you expect to have your hair

you'll have to be getting your

New Suede Botes
CHRISTMAS time is robe
time ... of that Martha is
certain frem the number of
men seen . selecting these
items of apparel, at WHY
TAL'S . . . with an ap
praising eye, too.
Maybe you entertain ideas of
something feminine and frilly
. . . but the weather being what
it is ... I couldn't help but no
tice that the smooth looking
Heavenly SUEDE robes . . .
with an aura of warmth about
them . . . are getting the favor,
of the women folk ... for then
practicality. These suede robes are new in
the store . . .and are in gorge
ous shades like California blue,
Rosebud pink and Valor rose
. . . with contrasting braid trim.
Another important factor . . .
plenty of the larger sizes are
available ... in 42, 44 and 46.
Not to be overlooked are the
rich, quilted robes in Whytal's
selection . . . pastel designs on
gold and white . . . cut with a
flare and beautifully lined,
. While suggestive of a honey
moon, perhaps, are the satin
and lace gown and robe sets I
saw there . . . some of them
with endearing old-fashioned
touches . . . and what glamor
ous gifts they'd make!
WHYTAL'S ... in the Medical-Dental
Building, Ninth and
Main ... is also showing many
other types of . desirable robes
for looking pretty at home.
Moe's Winter Hats
On Sale For Bait
SEEMS like an excellent
chance to get another win
ter hat ... to sort of pep
you up for the stormy
weeks ahead . , . while the
half-price sale is on in
MOE'S millinery department.
There's still a good selection
of hats that are just as fashion
right . . . dressy models, tai
lored felts, berets . , . and from
those Martha saw you shouldn't
have any difficulty in finding a
new one . . . and for HALF the
original price ...

boards, Monopoly sets and play
ing cards for the grown-ups . . ,
and a- few of the miniature
games, chip sets and checkers

pocket or traveling bag.
Inasmuch as Christmas is the
time when a gift for the home
is a thoughtful gesture ... I
looked over Garcelon's picture
collection . . , .which includes
actual animal photos, 1 large,
framed pictures for use over
the mantel, and a variety of
smaller types . , . adaptable to
most any room.

Joblessness

The impact of peace on jobless,

Fewer lay-offs In Industry

By year's end, the total of ac

After hovering around that
mark until about June the total
may begin to decline as civilian
manufacturing hits full stride.
But officials are wary of guess

The totals fall far short of Re

Snyder's estimate, on October 1,
that unemployment would hit B,

However, it is known that the
forecasts are concurred in by ex

Now - methods of eltmiimtlng
snags and old trees, one of tho

Rep. Ellsworth (R-Oro.)
Ellsworth suggested the forest
service use some of the surplus
war high explosives to do the
job.
He asked Lyle F. Watts, chief
of the service, to obtain high ex
plosives from the surplus proper
ty division and to have agents
plant ring of nltrogylcerln or
modern hluhcr explosives
around each of , the snugs or

Worth Trying
"Dynamite which lias boon

Ellsworth Mild. "If wo usod
