Returns To Klamath Stores

Lights aro going on U over
the world, and will twinkle
again on Klamath Falls Christ
mas trees this year.
Shophounds will find certain
favored types of baubles and
glitter for holiday decoration in
local shops for the first time
since Pearl Harbor.
There isn't much. But at least
few of the old rusty ornaments
can be replaced by new tinsel
and icicles. Merchants have
reason to expect strings of
Christmas tree lights and extra
screw-in bulbs in small ship
ments. Gift shops are showing for the
first time since before the war,
musical churches and sleighs
with reindeer, that play "Silent
Night" and "Jingle Bells."
Bright candles from pencil
to pillar sire, and of various
shapes Including pine cones,
Santa Clauses and angels, are
on hand too,
The five-and-dime stores have
a supply of paper wreathes and
trees of various sizes in red and
green; "angel hair," snow and
icicles, and ropes of celophane
garlands. ,
Colored plastic and glass balls,
mesh and celophane stockings,
both empty and filled; fire-proof
cotton for making bells over
lights, bright poinsettias of
chenille are also available.
Hard candy and candy canes
may be had this year too but
paper table decorations includ
ing holiday napkins and covers,
bonbons and place cards, are
still very scarce.
Halsey Gives Up

F. (Bull) Halsey, a sturdy sailor
who served his country for 45
years, has relinquished com
mand of the third fleet.
His blue-four starred flag was
hauled down from the main
truck of his flagship, the battle
ship South Dakota, in colorful
ceremonies yesterday as the ad
miral released command of the
fleet that so readily steamed
along the Japanese coast and
poured thousands of tons of
damage on the enemy.

other year in history, the state
unempl oymcnt compensation
commission said today in a sur
vey of war wages.
The average wage in 1944 of
persons working throughout the
year was $2511, compared with
$2391 in 1943, and $1632 in
1942.
The average last year for
shipyard workers was $3004,
