Swamp-Mucker" Plays Big
Pari In Reclaiming Lands
"Swamp - mucker" or "boot
strap dragline" the men or the
bureau of reclamation call it
when speaking of the Bessonette
brothers' dragline which has
played an important part in the
reclaiming of .bottom lands in
Tule and Lower Klamath lake
areas. The swamp-mucker has
skids under it instead of the us
ual tracks and sets on plonk
mats. Its only means of locomo
tion Is by pulling itself along
with the drag or lower cable at
tached to the bucket.
Due to the light weight of the
machine and the large base area,
it can work on soft, muddy
ground where the larger and
heavier machines mire down.
So the swamp-mucker has a def
inite place in building dikes or
excavating ditches on wet land.
The most, recent work com
pleted in this area with the ma
chine was the excavation of
drainage trenches along each
side of the location for the
Klamath straits drain outlet
through one and one-half miles
of swampy land for George R.
Stacy who is building the drain
for the bureau of reclamation.
After the drainage trenches
were completed, the water was
pumped out to dry up the area
and allow heavier and larger
equipment in to do the excavat
ing of the large drain.
Built in Eugene
The swamp-mucker was built
In Eugene in 1012 for use on the
tidal flats of Tillamook countv.
The Bessonettes bought the ma
chine In 1928 and have been en
gaged in the work in this part of
tne state ever since mat time.
Last year they took the first
