Patterson Backs Doolittle
J In Armed Merger Testimony
' WASHINGTON, Nov. 13 (IP)
Secretary of War Patterson
backed up army officers today
with the assertion they may "ex
press their own personal con
victions with force and vigor"
when discussing proposals to
merge the armed forces.
Patterson took his stand in
his reply to a letter from Secre
tary of the Navy Forrestal pro
testing statements by Lt. Gen.
James H. Doolittle before the
senate military committee.
"I have read his testimony,"
Patterson wrote, "and I am cer
tain that he had no intention
of presenting the case for unifi
cation on other than Its merits.
, Doolittle touched off the row
;When he remarked "our B29
ihnv urn rpstinc uneasily in
Hheir graves" because of claims
!by Admiral Chester W. Nimitz
and Marc Mitscher about the
Importance of the navy's role in
the Facmc victory.
-' Useless Recriminations
.: "Remarks reflecting on those
who hold contrary views or im
.pugning their motives, as well
as statements claiming that any
branch of the service won the
war single-handed, are bound to
produce more heat than light
and to provoke useless recrim
inations. i "This does not mean, how
ever, that officers should not
freely express their own per
sonal convictions with force and
vigor. Lt. Gen. Doolittle did
ithat in presenting his views to
",the committee."
As for Forresters suggestion
that "injurious acrimony" be
avoided by "elevating this whole
deliberation to the level of a
special inquiry by a presiden
tial commission," Patterson re
plied: "I do not agree that the de
liberation to the level of a spe
cial inquiry by a presidential
commission," Patterson replied:
:; "I do not agree that the de
liberations can be 'elevated' to
a higher level than the senate
:Committee on military affairs. I
know of no higher forum for
jnatters of this nature than the
appropriate committees of con
gress which have the ultimate
.responsibility ."
it The committee plans to hear
Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's
'views Friday. The European
theater commander arrived in
the United States by plane from
Germany yesterday.
tee made public yesterday - a
telegram Eisenhower sent from
.Frankfurt last July 25 saying
he recommended unification

combat operations and to avoid

CITY STREETS TO
BE CLEAR OF SNOW
With winter coming on, the
city street department once more
has the job of seeing that the
streets of Klamath Falls are kept
clear of snow.
City Engineer E. A. Thomas
stated that the city's snowplows
and other equipment are ade
quate for handling the snowfall
this year unless it is exceptional
ly heavy.
In the business district snow
is cleared off the streets and re
moved, and in the residential
sections it is graded to the side
of the streets.
"We appreciate the coopera
tion of individual property hold
ers in connection with the city
ordinance stating that property
holders should clear snow off the
sidewalks within 24 hours after
a snowfall," Thomas added.
The job of clearing off snow
reaches its peak after Christmas
and during January and early
February. Cleaning the streets
of leaves is almost finished now.
The two greatest bumper
crops in U. S. history were pro
duced in 1943 and 1944.
