land merchants on the recom
mended return to pre-war store
hours were to be aired today at
a special meeting of the Port
land retail bureau.
Opposition to the shift to
earlier opening and closing has
developed among men's clothing
and haberdashery shops, Bureau
President A. W. Molln reported.
The Portland Traction com
pany earlier voiced opposition to
any return to the 9 to 5 sched
ule because shortage of equip
ment would not allow handling
of the peak load of down-town
workers.

canteens which have been oper

Tho general land office has a
plan designed to maintain tho
economic stability of tho lumber
Industry In tho Pacific northwest
and the communities that depond
on the industry for existence.
The general pattern of the
program was disclosed today In
an announcement by Secretary
of Interior Ickcs that tho first
of series of meetings to dis
cuss the plan with state and local
officials will begin at Eugene,
Oregon, December 3.
Representatives of the lum
ber industry, land owners, labor
and residents of the area wore
invited to present statements at
the hearing,
The plan calls for agreements
between tho federal and state
governments and private timber
operators to maintain a reason
able balance between tree cut
ting and tree growing on lands
under their jurisdiction.
It calls for the establishment
of 12 master units embracing
more than 8,000,000 acres of In
termingled public and privately
owned land in Oregon and Cali
fornia. The 12 master units will
be broken down Into more than
100 smaller units for tho accom
plishment of sustained timber
yield by mutual forestry man
agement agreements.
