the "Mr. Shortstop" of baseball,
President Horace Stoneham of
. the New York Giants is not in
terested in the St. Louis Card
inals' star.
"We're ready to pay any rea
sonable sum for any player that
would help our club," said the
.Giant boss yesterday, as he es
corted a group of writers around
the Polo Grounds which is being
revamped for next year, "but' I
believe we are going to come up
with a shortstop who in a few
years will be every bit as good
as Marion."
"His name is John Rigney,"
continued Stoneham, "and we
obtained him from Oakland of
the Pacific Coast league in the
deal that sent Dolf Camilli to
manage the Oaks in 1944. Rig
ney, at the time, was in the
navy, and still is. Next to the
return of Johnny Mize, the big
gest boost our club could get
would be Rigney's release."
Mize was recently released.
"Reports from Hawaii and the
Pacific Isles where Rigney has
participated in the army-navy ex-

Marines To Be
Guests Of U
At Grid Tilt
A bus load of 30 marines from
the local barracks will be the
honor guest of the University of
Oregon at the Oregon-Washington
State football game in Eu
gene tomorrow.
Twenty of the marines are
wounded veterans of Iwo Jima
and Okinawa who have been un
der treatment at the post dis
pensary, and ' the remainder of
the party is to be made up of
the first ten men wanting to
make the trip and coming to the
gym before the bus leaves at 8
o'clock in the morning.
This trip was arranged by
CaDt. Coggeshall particularly
for his patients. The marines
will have reserved seats at tne
game, attend a dance at the Uni
versity tomorrow night, then
return to Klamath Falls Sunday

Charlie Trippi, backfield ace of the Georgia Bulldogs
who was discharged from th army last Friday, relaxes with

troversy rages over his point-shy release from the lervice and
his declaration that he was frozen to his Florida bas to play
football this year after repeatedly, requesting overseas duty.
He was finally discharged with 41 points on a "surplus and
hardship" basis after Georgia senators had talked to Secretary
of War Patterson about getting him released. Deiplt th
trouble his discharge is causing, however, Trippi has enrolled
at Georgia again and will play against LSU tomorrow after- '
noon.

As far as Klamath Falls is concerned the 1945 football season
reaches the top rung of the ladder tonight. Medford which
cither has a whale of a team or a whale of a press agent has
been galloping along with such success this yenr that somo ardent
supporters will tell you that the Tornado should have scheduled
college teams instead of kidding around witli high school com
petition. On the other hand, the Pelicans have been running
up against a snag here and there, in the form of Grant high and
Grants Pass, so the money up and down the main stem is going
for Klamath Falls and 21 points or better.
That's a lot of points, particularly before a gam has
van started and the rampaging Black Tornadoes hav been
getting too much build-up. Th Palicans hav been working
like maniacs all this week, plugging weak spots-in their
line and practicing defenslv tactics that may put a crimp
In Medford's vaunted running assault.
Reserve ducats for the tilt have been long gone for days,
and general admission tickets will undoubtedly go like free beer
at a political rally as soon as they're put on sale at the gate.
Even with the 1100 bleacher seats borrowed from the Marine
Barracks, if you want yours you'd better come early and bring
a picnic lunch. These borrowed bleachers bring Modoc's seating
capacity to something over five thousahd, and, of course, there'll
be standing room for a couple of thousand more if you like your
football standing up.
Harry Chipman of the Medford Mall-Tribune recently quoted
a Camp White newspaper article which lavishly referred to the
Black Tornadoes as "the ultimate in speed, power, deception
and know-how among prep-school football teams" and went on to
say that he wasn't bragging but Just wants the folk to know
what other people think of the local boys. Well, we'll see . . .
Much as I'd like to prfdict an outright victory for our
Pelicans, th record just won't bear that much weight. The
Tornadoes hav mad a spectacular showing this season
against not-too-good teams, if you will but before this night
is over th Pearpickers from across th mountain ar going
to know they didn't com over here just for th fun of it.
And if the Pelicans pull this one out of the fire, look for
another V-J celebration on Main street.
