Man Held In Jail
On Larceny Charge
Thomas Ed Allen, alias Jack
Lee, Is being held in the county
Jail on a charge of petit larceny
committed on October 6.
Donald R. McLcod filed the
charges In the district attorney's
omce Wednesday .afternoon and
charged that Allen had taken a
trunk, overcoat, jacket, hand
saw, filing tools, three pairs of
shoos and a suit case containing
papers and shirts. '
Tax-Exempt Property
Has Become Burden
PORTLAND, Oct. 11 (IP) The
amount of tax-exempt property
in Multnomah county has - in
creased until it threatens to be a
burden to the average small tax
payer. County Assessor Tom C.
Watson said today:
Federal property holdings, ex
panded recently, now amount to
92 per cent of the state's acreage,
he said, and threaten to increase.

tian Weinberg, 57, last night and
announced investigation had con
vinced them he had nothing to
do with the miner's pick slaying
three weeks ago of Rodger
Greene, 2nd, 75, son of a former
Washington state supreme court
justice.
Weinberg, who had lived at
Greene's home for years, was
taken into' custody for question
ing several days ago. Inspectors
said they believed an anonymous
"confession" note written on
Weinberg's typewriter had been
an effort by someone else to
throw suspicion on him.

A committee that won a church
council demand for an inquest
Into the police shooting of a
negro declared today it was not
satisfied with a verdict that the
shooting was justified.
A coroner's jury ruled last
night that City Detective Bard
Purcell acted In "performance of
duties and in protection of him
self and fellow officers" when he
fatally wounded Edwin Jones,
37, last August, while seeking
another negro.
At the inquest, demanded by
the Portland council of churches
and other groups, police said
they forced their way Into
Jones' home when he refused to
open, and fired in response to
two shots from within the house.
The Jones' family and neigh
bors testified that the police did
not identify themselves, causing
the dead man to think that rob
bers were entering. Police de
nied this.
The committee of churchmen
and businessmen said it would
"continue efforts to achieve the
frinciples of justice represented
n the Jones case." .
In a formal statement the
group charged that' the inquest
was umair oecause of "ex
clusion of negro citizens from
the jury, the refusal of the coro
ner to permit a public examina
tion of jurors, and refusel of the
police sergeant witness to pro
duce the official report of the
killing."
