On Ammunition
May Be Lifted
WASHINGTON. Aug. 27 VP)
The war production board Is
considering the lifting of restric
tions on the salo of civilian am
munition, but a decision Is being
delayed because Its office of ci
vilian requirements fears there
might be a shortage for essen
tial users.
The OCR, it as learned today,
took the position Unit unrestrict
ed sale of ammunition to hunt
ers and sportsmen might leave
farmers, ranchers and law en
forcement officers without suf
ficient supplies.
A decision Is expected this
week.
Even the lifting of restrictions
at this time, officials stressed,
would not mean much ammuni
tion for the present hunting sea
son, since it Is estlmiitod it would
rcqutro about three months to
get supplies into the hands of
retailers.

TODAY'S GUEST COLUMN
(From Wild Lit Lints by Jamos
H. McCool in The Oregonian)
Editor's Note: Wc feul that
many Klamath county sportsmen
will find this information of
great Interest as it deals with
Diamond lake and the destruc
tive roaches which have been
found to be prevalent there.
With no further ado, here It Is.
Oregon's most prolific natural
breeding grounds for rainbow
trout is beautiful Diamond lake
in the southwest sector of the
state, Big fish have lured an
glers from all over the world
to this lovely Inland body of
water, which Is about six miles
long and three or four miles
wide. It lies In a groovo be
tween two lofly, snow-capped
mountains, whose peaks arc
seemingly only about IS miles
apart. The scenic setting is so
unusual that many an angler has
lost a whuppcr in the weeds
while gazing afar.
Trout nn to 30 pounds have
been caught in the lake.. The
fish arc so large that a limit of
five in one day has been estab
lished by law. And year after
year the fishing has been little
short of remarkable.
But ssvaral years ago some
careless anglar dumped what
was Itlt of a bucket of live
minnows in the lower end of"
th likt and today It Is aliva
with millions of roachos,
trash fish which devour all lha
plant Ufa on which tha Dia
mond laka rainbows have
thriven. If these roaches ara
not controlled by tha state
. psmt commission, on of the
best trout fishing waters in
all America will be destroyed.
The lake is so large that it can
not be "poisoned," as was the
case with South Twin lake sev
eral years ago. There the
roaches were exterminated by a
liberal dosage of derrls root
powder after South Twin's trout
population had been literally
starved to death. This lake was

Game commission biolo
gists are studying tha roach
problem at Diamond laka and
thay believe they can allevi
ate the situation by seining
the young roaches from tha
shallows along shore where
thay congregate in the spawn
ing season. At this period the
rainbow trout stay out in deep
water and tha trash fish can
be scooped up by the tons
without taking mere than a
few trout iingerlings in the
process.
Such seining operations were
carried on at Crescent lako last
year and more than 35 tons of
roaches were removed. But this
is expensive conservation work
and the game commission
wishes sportsmen of Oreeon
would refrain from carrying live
minnows on fishing trips. The
Oregon law prohibits the use of
such minnows except where
taken from waters in which they
ore usca lor Dan.

Suds Loom As Flag Threat
By PAUL WELLS
Associated Press Sports Writer
Three games apart, Portland's
faltering Beavers and Seattle's
challenging Rainiers are headed
today for a two-week stay in
California that may be the de
ciding factor in the Pacific
Coast league pennant race.
With four weeks left in the
season, current first division
teams appear sure to keep their
roursome intact for the gover

lions they will finish is still un
certain.
Seattle, playing championship
ball, is a definite threat to the
Beavers who have only 10 games
in the last 23 while the Rainiers
were copping 14 out of 21. The
northwesterners have the one
two berths clinched.
