All Americans seem likely to get
a cut In their income taxes after
January 1. Perhaps several mil
lion will have to pay no income
la vps nt all next Year.
Congress is coming back Sep
tember 5 in, a tax-cutting mooa.
Some of the best-informed tax
experts in Washington think a
reduction in personal income
taxes will be enacted before
Christmas with administration
approval if the cut isn't too
drastic.
Moderate Cut
The expected reduction prob
ably would be only moderate
for most taxpayers. The man
earning a lot of money would
have a smaller percentage cut off
his taxes than the fellow making
?35 a week.
People in the lowest income
group would be the ones whose
income taxes might be wiped
out entirely.
Survey
A survey of congressional and
other tax authorities today pro
duced the following picture:
1. No tax reductions are like
lv on 1945 income. The expect
ed cut would be felt first in
smaller payroll deductions start
inB January 1. It would not af
fect the filing of 1945 income
tax returns next March lo.
2. Federal taxes on such items
as alcoholic beverages, furs,
luggage, jewelry, theatre tickets,
cabaret spending, and telephone
calls will drop back down auto
matically to 1942 rates six
months after the offical "termi
nation of hostilities.
(The hitch is that technically
this termination does not occur
until the president or congress
so declares. There is no indica
tion yet when such a declaration
might come.)
3. The 95 per cent excess pro
fits tax on corporations is sure
to be killed. Nobody loves it
now. The only question is
whether to do it next January
1 or later.
Klamath Man Held
For Drunk Driving
Burke C. Parrish, 1343 S. 6th,
was arrested early this morning
by city police at 6th and Market
for driving a motor vehicle while
under the influence of intoxi
cating liquor and for failure to
have an operator's license.
He is held in the city jail in
lieu of S105 bail and will appear
in police court tomorrow morn
ing.
Seven drunks and one drunk
and disorderly case are being
held in jail and will appear in
court Friday.
Injuries from home accidents
total more than 13,000 every day
in the year.

Families Leave Vanport
Housing Project At War End
PORTLAND, Ore.. Aug. 16
The war's end reverberated
gloomily today in Vanport City,
the nation's largest housing pro
ject. Shipyard workers whose Jobs
are doomed to vanish loitered
outside the frame houses and
asked each other how soon the
axe would fall. Women began
dusting off their smooth-tired
cars; and around the trailer
camp men hammered their port
able homes into shape for travel.
Housing officials predicted a
record emigration for tomorrow
and Saturday. As early as Inst
Monday the number of depart
ing families at McLoughlln
Heights. Vancouver, rose 30 per
cent above normal.
Many tinhatters said they
would stay laid off. But others
were jumping the gun in a race
for permanent peacetime jobs.
"I'm going back to my carpen
ter's job in Lufkin, Texas." said
Horace Francher as he loaded
his wife and three children into
their trailer. "We ve saved $1400
here in 11 months, and I've got
more work promised me back
home than I can do in two
years."
A foundry worker, dusting off
his worn car for exodus to Flor
ida, said he and his wife would
go back to picking croos. "That's
a big bean country," he said.
We sorta follow the beans. Big
potato country, too."
But the attitude of many un
certain when their Jobs here will
fold, uncertain where other lobs
may spring up was summed up
by a young negro sweeper at the
Vancouver yard. "I don't know."
said Jimmielee Woods, "We'll
wait and see."
SERVICE TO PARK
Louis Soukup, director of
the Klamath Bus company, an
nounced toduy tnat permission
has been granted by the office of
defense transportation, Seattle,
for bus service to Moore park.
Fourteen trips are scheduled
to the park for Sundays, begin
ning August 19, at 10:20 a. in.,
and oo xtimr.nj every 40 minutes
until 2:40 p. m. Runs will begin
again at 4:40 p. m., and continue
every 40 minutes until 9:20 p. m.
Busses will leave from town
at 4th and Main. Time tables
will be posted at this point and
at the park.
Soukup emphasized that buss
es would be run on the above
schedule only is l'inij as it paid
the company to continue. As
soon as trade drons off, he stat
ed, trips will be discontinued.
