mantling the units preparatory
to moving.

Under the Lanham act of leg
islature, buildings , erected for
the war housing program may
not remain more than two years
after the duration of war. This
agreement was made not to con
flict with Individual civilian
building enterprises.

H. G. Atherton, USNR, has
been promoted from the rank of
lieutenant commander lo that of
full commander, according to
word from the Klamath nuvul air
station.
Cmdr. Atherton Is tho execu
tive officer at the air bu.to and
has been on duty here since
January 18 of this veur. He hud
tirevlously been in the South
aclflc.
Before entering the navy, the
commander was an architect fit
Los Qatos, Calif. At one time
he was the acting commissioner
of public works for the city of
Fresno In addition to his reg
ular business.
Ho Is a graduato of the Uni
versity of Illinois and was a
Rlinndes scholar from that school
to Oxford university In England.
After the beginning of the war,
he was public works officer In
charge of new construction nt
the naval air station' In Oakland,
Calif. He has also been the of
ficer in charge 'at that base.
Cmdr. Atherton has also been
the executive officer of the naval
air station at Canton Island in
the Pacific and operations of
ficer at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii.
His wife lives here at 2180

era are largely crack nots
but they are crackpots of n most
peculiar type, watcning them
somehow they and tho crowds
who listen are fascinating, and
you come back again and again
you come to the conclusion
that they are exhibitionists.
With a few exception, thev
are battered specimens who. one
suspects, are pushed about. They
are mcagerly dressed. They are
Inclined to be so thin as to sug
gest under-nourishment. An
American notices that they have
been without dental care. Get
ting up on a step-ladder fa high

something that is' lacking In
their starved lives delusions of
grandeur, probably.
Religion. Is a favorite subject,
but not evangelistic religion.
They are totally uninterested in
bringing people down to the
mourner's bench. They run.
rather, to dogma. With all this
political furore, there hes been
no leftlsh or radical or, for that
matter, tny oiher kind of intel
ligent political speaking. Much
of the stuff is the purest drivel,
and after about five minutc-s of
it they call for questions which

The questions asked are as
silly as the subjects the speakers
deal with, For example: "How do
they get sausages out of a pig
without breaking tho skin?" The
answer, given with an expression
of condescending disdain; "Why,
with Jet propulsion, of course!
Whereupon tho crowd howls
with glee et the discomfiture of
the questioner.
Tho speakers are obviously
professionals and in order to get
a crowd they have to develop
such tricks of repartee. But
they arc forbidden to take up
a collection and the taboo holds
rigidly. No coins are tossed.
There is NO money Incentive.
It Is some Inner urge that drives
them to do it. As already stated,
they are strictly TYPES.

TT wouldn't go In America.
One doubts if It would go
anywhere in the world save in
Hyde Park. In all probability
it wouldn't go here but for the
TRADITION. But It Is one of
the great free shows of London.
Thousands flock here every
night, strolling from group to
group and taking it in.
It is probably significant that
the questioners fall into the
same general types as the speak
ers. It seems obvious that Hyde
Park gives to a certain type of
S-T-R-E-T-C-H!
S-T-R-E-T-C-H
