PEACE RAISES
JOBLESS TOLL
TO 400,000

Peace abruptly ended the well
paying war plant jobs of hun
dreds of thousands of Ameri-
pnnv.
Many more will bo out of
work in the next few weeks. '
How many could be restored
into peacetime industry and how
soon were largely mntters of
speculation although some plant
executives were hopeful of
quick reconversion.
An Associated Press survey of
the larger war plant areas today
showed that at least 400,000
workers were laid off immedi
ately after the Japs surrendered
and that another 1,878,000 would
be affected soon.
Contract cancellations run
ning into the billions by the
army and navy resulted imme
diately in closing of many war
plants big and little from
coast to coast. More shutdowns
were imminent.
Affected were all mariner of
plants, airplane, engine, tank,
propellor, electrical, shipyards i
and others which have kept the
materiel of war flowing endless
ly to the armed forces for more
than three years.
Some of the closings were
temporary while management
could reconvert to peacetime
commodities: some plants will
reopen shortly with greatly re
duced staffs; some will remain
closed. In some cases manage
ment still was canvassing the
field to see what might be done.
This was the picture in west
ern cities:
. Portland Kaiser yard offi
cials said payroll of 60,000 em
ployes to be dropped gradually.
Denver Kaiser industries
laid off. 3500; Rocky Mountain
arsenal to dismiss 1000 em
ployes. Seattle Chamber of com
merce estimated 20,000 workers
will be out of jobs temporarily
but quickly reabsorbed. Todd
Pacific shipyards at Tacoma
plans to discharge about 2000
monthly until 20,000 out. Navy's
Puget sound navy yard jammed
with ship repair work which
will keep employment at a peak
for a year.
Phoenix Goodyear laying off

$22,000 In Benefits
A monthly amount of over
$22,000 has been paid in the area
serviced by the Klamath Falls
office of Social Security board,
according to the local office.
This monthly amount was paid
to 1145 beneficiaries. ,
This report was made on the
tenth, anniversary of the Social
Security act. On August 14,
1935, the presidents signature
made the bill a law.
Today the Social Security act
is providing insurance benefits
or public assistance payments to
more than four million people in
all parts of America, and the
total payments have passed the
eight billion dollar mark.

trolled rioting, looting and as

morning after 1000 police and
navy snore patrolmen dispersed
mobs jamming downtown San
Francisco streets.
The city's third night of cele
brating found crowds in a de
