    New York Nicks Ferriss
for 10 Hits; Win, 4-2,
Tigers Rap Browns, 5-4
By JACK
Associated Press
Nobody can convince Dave Ferris that the New York Yankee!
are juit a shadow of the old murderer's row and the rookie of
the year has evidence to back up his case.
The spectacular Boston Red Sox ireshman has lost only four
games while winning 17, but three of his setbacks were at the
hands of the New Yorkers.
When the discharged air force veteran broke into the league
with eight straight triumphs, including a a u shutout ot tne
Yanks, the writers went scurrying for the record books to ex
cavate matching deeds. But Joe
the search by knocking him oil
dav afternoon in June.
Next time the husky righthander came up against the Yanks
he was slugged off the hill, the only time he has been kayoed in
20 starts, and soundly drubbed,
Ferriss Edged Out
The prize rookie had lost only
once since and uuoici nacin t

day until yesterday when they

Ferriss wasn't knocked out or
even close but the New York
team combed him for 10 hits,
four by Tucker Stainback, and
edged him out in 1U innings, i-i
Hal Newhouser pulled up
even with rerriss at the 17-win
pole by turning back the chain
pion St. Louis Browns in 12
heats, 0-4. jimmy uutlaw s sin
gle with the bases loaded scored
the lefthander who had led off
the third overtime inning with a
single.
Cleveland moved into fifth
place by notching its seventh tri
umph in the last eight starts,
nosing out Chicago, 6-5, in a
night game. Superb relief chuck
ing by Pete Center who' picked
up his fourth successive decision
wiuiout defeat, lifted the In
dians up past the White Sox in
the league standings.
Washington and Philadelphia
were washed out of a twi-night
doubleheader. They will play
iwo tonigni.
Braves Split With Giants
Boston's new manaeer. Del
Bissonette, got his first taste of
the troubles that caused Bob
Coleman to resign as the Boston
Braves sank to their 10th
straight defeat by bowing to the
new i one uiants, 4-3, in the
first game of a doubleheader.
Relief Pitcher Mort Cooper
waiitea tnree men in a row to
lorce in the tying run before
Phil Weinrraub broke it up. The
nightcap threatened to be a sim
ilar story when the Giants ral
lied to tie in the ninth but the
Braves snapped out of it with
five in the 13th to grab a 9-4
even Dreax.
St. Louis missed a chance to
regain second place by losing to
Cincinnati's Bucky Walters 2-0
in the second game after grab
bing the opener, 4-3 as Al Jur

game and initial victory of the
campaign.
Brooklyn and the Phillies.

Flown To Site
Of Big 3 Meet
WASHINGTON, Aug. 1 (P)
The annual water fowl hunting
regulations, usually issued in
July, have been delayed because
of President Truman's absence
from the country.
The regulations, which must
have the signature of the chief
executive, have been flown to
Potsdam, the fish and wild life
service said yesterday. Officials
expect to announce this season's
rules early in August.

Seattle's Bainiers, off to i
flying start against San Fran
cisco by virtue of a 2-0 win last
night, stowed two wishes in
their Pacific league "hope chest'
today victory for themselves
and the cellar-dwelling Holly
wood Stars.
Whether the second - place
Rainiers can overhaul the top
spot Portland Beavers hinges
heavily on the Hollywood-Port
land series which gets under
way with a doubleheader to
night. Seattle's triumph Tues
day moved the skiffmen within
five and a half games of the
pace-setters.
Solons Take Third
Only change in the standings
resulted from Sacramento's 7-3
decision over the Los Angeles
Angels, moving the Solons into
third half a tilt ahead of the
Seals. In second division con
tests the Oakland Acorns split
a twin bill with the San Diego
Padres, the Oaks winning the
curtain raiser 11-6 and dropping
the nightcap 1-Z.
Seattle s satisfaction in blank
ing San Francisco was more
than statistical, since only last
week Seal Skipper "Lefty"
O'Doul classed the Rainiers as
strictly a second-rate club. The
game was a pitchers battle,
with Southpaw Chet Johnson
edging out Right-hander Frank-
le Seward. Both gave up 11 hits.
The northerners got to Seward
for their brace of runs in the
sixth inning as First Baseman
George McDonald and lhird
Sacker Charley Aleno "singled
and came home on Shortstop
Joe Dobbins triple.
Fletcher Wins
Sacramento's ace righthander,
Guy Fletcher,-had little trouble
setting the Angels down, 7-3.
The Solons were never headed
after jumping into a two-run
lead in the first inning - on
doubles by Gene Handley and
George Mandish. and a single
by Jo-Jo White. The defeat, Los
Angeles fourth in a row, was
charged to Paul Lammers.
San Diego s Vic Trahd turned
in the best mound performance
of the evening with his one-
hitter that gave the Padres a
2-1 verdict over Oakland in the
regulation finale of a double

Bruins Loom

By JERRY L1SKA
CHICAGO, Aug. 1 (tV) The
super-charged Chicago Cubs,
who have "Borowy'd" new
strength, appear favored by the
schedule-makers to head tho Na
tional league parndc the remain
ing two months of the season,
The Bruins wind up one of
their most successful home
stands in several years today
and tomorrow against the Pitts
burgh Pirates, but a 21-gamc
road trip they begin Friday
should cause them no worry.
The jaunt pits them against
the Cincinnati Reds whom they
have trimmed 13 times in 13
starts this season, and Boston,
Philadelphia, Brooklyn and
New York who contributed 13
victories in 16 starts to the Cubs
on their last eastern swing.
Aided by Hank Borowy,
whose acquisition from the New
York Yankees continues to
mystify and rankle the rest of
the majors, the Cubs would
have to do an unexpected tail-
spin to dissipate their current
six-came lead over the St. Louis
Cardinals and Brooklyn Dod
gers.

Rosenlund's single. They had
scored their one run in the sec
ond, however, on a walk by Vic
Picetti, a stolen base. Catcher
Del Ballinger's wild throw and
Tom Hafey's outfield fly.
Boken Homers
San Diego knotted the count
in the third and broke the dead
lock in the last of the ninth
when . Second Baseman Bob
Boken smashed one of Johnny
Babich's slants out of the park.
Oakland's 11-6 victory in the
first game was clinched by a
seven-run explosion in the fifth
frame at the expense of fitcner
Bob Ferguson. During the out
burst Hafey homered with one
man aboard, Les Scarsella dou
bled with the sacks loaded and
Picetti drove in two tallies with
another double. j
All series in the circuit this
week will be extra-game affairs;
to make up postponements ear
lier in the season. Oakland and
San Diego will play nine tilts
with doubleheaders set for
Thursday and Sunday. Seattle
and San Francisco will sand-fl
wich in an extra encounter Fri
day night. Portland will play
two games at Hollywood Friday
instead of tne usual one. And
Sacramento has twin bills

menu tonight and Friday.

Meet Olsen
In Mat Tiff
In the opening scrap on Pro
moter Mack Lillard's Dicep bill
Friday night at the armory
Walter "Sneeze" Acliiu has been
booked to tangle with Milt
Olsen.
Olsen is a good rasslcr who
has had the misfortune to be
paired with a hulking meany in
just about every fight he has
participated in here. He is fast,
aggressive, and clever and has
held his own with his larger op
ponents. Achiu is also a sporting grap
pler and is loath to use his
dreaded "Chinese sleeper" un
less it is absolutely necessary.
This should be a good, fast bout
and rounds out a card that sends
Paavo Katonen against Antone
Leone and Georges Dussctte
against Jack Lipscomb in a dou
ble main event.
A coin will be flirmcd in de
termine which bout will precede
the other.
