Leone In Wild Scrap
By PAUL HAINES
There wasn't any rassling In
the inu In event last night at the

fest the two gladiators put on
for the funs.
Antono Leone met his match at
last and In none other than hla
hated rival, Jack "Buck" Lipa
comb. To start things off right,
Leone refused to mix it up until
Promoter Muck Lillard had re
turned $100 of forfeit money to
him.
While all this was taking place
Lipscomb was seething with
rage in his corner. After Leone
had been satisfied the two
musclcrs Uinglod with no holds
barred and the devil take the
hindmost,
Leone Throws Chairs
They gouged each other's eyes,
bent each other over the ropes,
and the whole thing culminated
when both boys went out of the
ring and Leone heaved two
chairs back into the arena after
Lipscomb had climbed back
through the ropes,
Leone took the first fall of
the match by ramming Buck in
to the corner post and then
applying a chin lock that almost
broke Lipscomb's neck.
Buck came out of it in a hurry,
though, and pummelcd Leone
all over the ring before taking
the second flop with a leg strap.
With tho count cvcn-Stcvcn,
Leone tried to make uso of the
ropes in the same manner that
he did before here, but Wally
was more vigilant and broke lt
up. Lipscomb mustered some
hidden strength and slammed
Leone to the mat with two full
body slams and took the decisive
fall and the match with a Bos
ton crab.
Leone stormed at the dcclalon
and called Lipscomb a "yellow
rat," but it was all over but the
Jeering for Antone.

Cubs Nudge

Tigers Win
Chicago Buys Hank Borowy
From Yanks For $100,000;
Newhouser Raps Yankees
By JACK HAND
Associated Press Sports Writer
Pitching is dominating the
ennunt races in both major
eagucs today with a banner
crop of 14 candidates aiming for
tne zu-win mam.
With the Chicago Cubs spend
ing an estimated $100,000 for
Hank Borowy in a deal with the
New York Yankees and Hal New
houser spearheading the Detroit
Tigers' drive with 16 triumphs,
it is evident that both Managers
Charley Grimm and Steve O'
Neill subscribe to the theory that
pitching is 75 per cent of any
ball club.
The Cubs had both Hank Wyse
(14-6) and Claude Passeau (11-3)
taking dead aim on the charmed
circle before Borowy was added
to the flock. Charley (Red)
Harrctt (12-7) and Ken Burk
hardt (11-5) of the St. Louis
Cardinals both had a good chance
to make the grade as did Hal
Gregg of Broklyn (12-6). Bill
Voiselle of New York (11-10) and
Rip Sewell of Pittsburgh (11-7)
were more than half way home.
American league leader was
Dave Ferriss of Boston (17-3)
followed closely in total victor
ies by Detroit's Hal Newhouser
(16-6), both a cinch to hit 20,
likely to make it 25 and with an
outside chance at the 30 circle.
Other members hoping to grad
uate into the big dough class
were oteve uromek of Cleveland
(12-5), Dutch Leonard (11-4) and
Roger Wolff (11-6) of Washing
ton, Thornton Lee of Chicago
(11-7) and Russ Christopher of
Philadelphia (11-7).
Oscar Judd of the Phillies and
Voiseile hooked up in a score
less duel for 10 innings, broken
in the 11th by Vince DiMaggio's
two-run homer. No. 15, giving
Judd a 2-0 shutout on three
blows.
Chicago continued to haunt
Cincinnati, making it ten in a
row over the groggy Reds, 2-1,
in a 10-inning duel between
Passeau and Bucky Walters.
Harry Lowrey'a single scoring
Phil Cavaretta enabled the
Bruins to hold their 41-game
lead on the Cards.
Brooklyn scored three un-
and Long Distance calls!
That's an average day's work for the Bell
System and it's getting bigger every day.
Many of these calls are made by the thou
sands of returning overseas veterans..
By making none but urgent Long Distance
calls day or night, you'll be helping their
calls get through quicker.

Fishing Conditions Spotty
Reports Game Commission
PORTLAND, July 28 (VP)
Fishing conditions in Oregon
this week are spotty, the state
game commission said Friday,
with a few good catches in Coos
and Lincoln counties.
Angling conditions were re
ported poor in most of Umatilla
and Josephine counties and only
fair in Lake county. In Tilla
mook county, a small number of
Chinook salmorl are being caught
In tidewater on the big westucca,
with fair catches from the north
and south forks of the Nchalem
river and the Wilson river.
Sportsmen found the ocst
eained runs in the eighth to
hand Boston its sixth straight
loss. 3-2. Dixie Walker's double
following an error, a single and
a walk ruined the day for tne
Braves.
Detroit Beats Chisox
Johnny Humphries of Chicago
followed up a winning four-hit
effort with a losing thice-hitter
as the White Sox bowed to De
troit. 1-0. Eddie Mavo's homer
and Newhouser's effective chuck
ing did the Job, protecting the
Bengals three game lead.
Washington kept step by beat
ing Ferriss in Boston, 3-1, only
the third setback for the ex
serviceman. Bingo Binks had a
perfect 3 for 3 afternoon and
Bob Johnson's round tripper off
Wolff was the only Red Sox
tally.
Floyd Bevens, the Yankee ace
now that Borowy has gone,
earned No. 10 by blanking the
Philadelphia A's, 2-0, although
Russ Christopher gave up only
four safeties and struck out 12
batters.
Gromek bested Nelson Potter
of St. Louis in the eighth pitch-1
ing duel of the day, 3-1, much '
to the delight of 20,431 Cleve
land fans, third largest turnout
of the season. '
