Manager Joe McCarthy of the
New York Yankees appears to
nave no serious ailment, Dr. Ar
thur J. Burke, his personal phy
sician says.
The physician made his state
ment following a preliminary
examination of McCarthy -who
arrived yesterday for a rest on
Ms farm near Buffalo.
A second, and more detailed
examination was scheduled for
today. Dr. Burkel said.
McCarthy told newsmen who
met him at the Buffalo airport
that he was reporting for a
complete "physical check. He
added, "I'm tired, really con
cerned about my health. I just
want to go out to my home and
rest alone, away from every

Plea For World Series
Encourages Sports Fans
WASHINGTON, July 25 OF),
A senatorial plea against "pre-
mature" government action ban
ning traditional fall sports events
encouraged both baseball and
football fans today.
The plea came from Chair
man Mead (D-N.Y.) of the sen
ate war investigating committee
who added that the transporta
tion pinch might be eased by
fall.
But whether it Is or not, Mead
told a reporter yesterday, the
world series should be played
"even if they have to go back
to the horse and buggy days."
The senator, whose committee
just had completed a two-day in
quiry into transportation prob
lems, said he expected more
gasoline to be available in the
next few months and that it
must be bossible for owners of
private ' cars to transport the
series teams.
Mead said he wanted the ser
ies played because it "means so
much to the boys in service."
The office of defense trans
portation has not yet said wheth
er it will permit the diamond
classic to be played. Nor has
the agency commented on re
ports that non-championship
