today's Roundup
By MALCOLM EPLEY
A
GOOD word for a democratic president
was voiced in Klamath Falls today by a
republican congressman.
'.Big, good-natured and sincere
man ol tlie second uregon
district said he couldn't con-
1 icicntiously refrain from
speaking out in praise of
J President Harry Truman.
i"Mr. Truman assumed tre
i mendous responsibilities and
1 h has won widespread good
i will and admiration," said Mr.
Stockman. "He has aroused
1 afdesire on the part of every
! body in Washington to help
him make a. success in the
presidency. He has no illus-
I ions about his ability to do everything himself
I -instead, he has a knack for choosing com
I petent men to handle the big jobs, and is giving
' tljem full rein once they are selected."
'Mr. Truman's homely middle-class back-
' ground the s an ex-naoeraasner wno once went
! broke), his widespread acquaintanceship and
friendship in both parties on capitol hill, and
I his obvious desire to make' good for the coun-
try, are factors that have tended to create a
fniendly feeling throughout the nation, Mr.
! Stockman commented.
' tThe Oregon congressman said he might not
' always agree with Truman, and he might not
always vote with him. But that's his realistic
appraisal of the Truman situation at this time.
Night Flying
SUITE a stir was created in our town by
the night-flying navy planes today. A lot
riks reported to this office or to the police
station or to the air station that they lost sleep
last night, and there was some indignation.
We lost a little sleep ourselves, but we are
not in sympathy with the indignation. We think
that the navy fliers should refrain from low
flying, motor-gunning, or whatever else is un
necessary in connection with' night-flying and
which creates a disturbance in the town. (It
isrour understanding the navy officials at the
station have taken steps to prevent a repetition
of these things.) But we do wish to point out
that night flying is an essential part of the
training program, that the guys who do the
flying are losing a lot o sleep themselves, and
that a little loss of sleep on the part of towns

FEEL SHORTAGE
With many lumber workers
turning to farm work, tne laoor
shortage in local lumber mills
threatens to become worse. Mills
not only in Klamath Falls but
throughout the state are suffer
ing from serious labor shortage
which, if it continues, may crip.
pie the industry.
One of the things causing the
shortage of workers is men leav
ing tne mills to worn on farms
or ranches because of higher
wages offered in farm work,
Also, top skilled men and young'
cr men usually interested in
learning the various lumber jobs
nave oeen taken by the -armed
forces. One other cause for the
shortage is the lack of housing
here. Many skilled men have
been lost to the community be
cause they were unable to find
nouses or rooms.
The mills are being forced by
the labor situation to curtail
their output by running fewer
snms. in some ot tne mills,
skilled hands are moved from
one machine to another in an ef
fort to keep the mill going,
which means some machines or
plants must be left idle.
"I was in hopes that the re
turning servicemen would take
up tne slack but we don t seem
to be eettine enoueh for them
to ao wis, said Ueorge Mis-
leiai, logging and lumber place
ment officer of the employment
advice, in rtiamam f ans, ap
proximately 30 to 35 servicemen
a month are returning to civilian
life but this will only be about
enough to offset the return to
school this fall of school chil
dren who are now working.
TO REBUILD MILL
MOLALLA, July 24 (")-The
Lowes lumber mill here will be
rebuilt and operating within 40
days, Owner A. F. Lowes said
today after fire Sunday de
stroyed the $70,000 property. He
said he had purchased another
sawmill and rebuilding will be
gin immediately.

An Inspiring Trip
friend, Fred Heilbronner, is back
from Portland, and he has written the
following piece which we think is interesting
and worthy of something better than the waste
basket: Dear Mac:
A week or so ago, while In Portland on
business, an acquaintance spoke of travelling
to San Francisco and asked the best way to
travel from Eugene on. Naturally, being from
Klamath, and a resident for about 40 years, I
shorter, faster and better high
way by way of Klamath. He was surprised
to learn that it was not only IS miles shorter
to San Francisco by way of Klamath, but that
there were numerous less-sharp curves and also
When I arrived at the Goshen
a picture of the sign: left San
miles; right San Francisco, 570
it to him.
Then as I drove along homeward bound, I
got to thinking and figuring. From Goshen
Junction to Klamath Falls, it is about 172 miles
Here's the point: Out of that 172 miles, about
150 miles of that distance (taking out a few
miles from Goshen toward Oakridge and a few
miles from Klamath Falls to the Agency) the
continuously through forests on
the highway. He travels by
creeks, and lakes, the railroads,
towns, mountains and snowcovered
peaks. He travels through virgin fir, pine and
fir, lodge pole ' pine, and virgin pine, and
finally winds up in the famous Wood River
valley and Upper Klamath lake before reach
ing Klamath Falls. Where else in Oregon can
one travel 150 miles continuously, with forest
on both sides of him? Not only that but from
Oakridge on to the summit of Sun mountain,
the motorist can negotiate any curve at 50
miles an hour with safety (in peacetime).
How many of our own Klamath people have
stopped to analyze these facts, let alone resi
dents from other parts of Oregon? I've been
travelling this route ever since it was opened,
and it just now dawned on me.
If these ramblings are of any value to you,
Mac, in helping promote our highway, and our
Klamath country, you are at liberty to use
any part of it. Otherwise, discard it in your
waste basket.
Sincerely,
FRED.
We Got Back
ANYTHING can happen at a fire, and in this
country where most people keep a little
ammunition around for deer rifles or shotguns
or souvenirs, flying lead is a possible hazard
at a housa fire.
We know, becausa wa were standing around
gawking at the Third and Lincoln street fire
when there was a sharp report. A state
policeman came along and told us that there
was ammunition exploding in there, and we
ought to get back.
We got back clear back to the office. In
fact.

Some 60-odd bundles have
been dropped intermittently for
three days, until tne stove, radio,
fire-finding instruments, tents
and bedding for the camp were
delivered.
The work of setting up the
lookout on Brown, which start
ed with a load of lumber being
parachuted down July 12, has
been delayed because bad fire
conditions required tne service
of the plane which was used
to drop supplies.
Ten men were dispatched to
hike in over the rugged trail to
collect and pack off chutes and
rigging.

Demonstrating food freezing
methods, Thomas Onsdorff, as
sociate professor of foods indus
try department of Oregon State
college, conducted the first in
series of home food preservation
classes at the Pelican theatre at
9:30 Monday morning. Onsdorff
showed examples of food frozen
at the college to the 200 people
attending. Besides meat and
vegetables there were berries
frozen m 1938 which were still
edible. Using beans, he also
demonstrated blanching and
packing processes.
Onsdorff, who was introduced
by Mrs. Winnifred tiillen, chair
man of the Klamath County Nu
trition council, stated that Ore
gon and Washington were pi
oneers in the freezing industry.
as tne tirst commercial , plants
were located in these states.
Some of the greatest advances in
the scientific method of freez
ing foods were also made in Ore
gon and Washington.
Stating that Oregon families
have not made as good a use of
tneir lockers as the average
family in the United States, he
pointed out that the average
Oregon family uses the locker
for 350 pounds of food a year
while the average family of four
uses 1000 pounds of food a year
irom tneir locker.
The widespread use of the
private home freezing units and
lockers will not put tho com
mercial operators out of busl
ness, he said, because these com
panies offer services which are
not practical to do at home be
cause they take too much time
and equipment.
Other home canning classes
will be held Wednesday and
Thursday from 9:30 to 11 a. m
These classes will be conducted
by Mrs. Vivian Freeman, a can
ning expert from Portland, and
are open to anyone interested in
attending. They are sponsored
by the Klamath Nutrition coun
cil.
