Finn, in the main event
With Katonen, Leone, and
Jack Lipscomb remaining in tne
free-for-all, Jack and Antone
attempted to work the old two
brothers and a stranger stunt
on Paavo. The fighting iinn
put up a terrific battle against
odds, however, and Leone then
put the double X on Lipscomb
to leave Katonen and himself
as the two finalists.
The two gladiators tussled on
almost even terms through the
first canto with Paavo having
a shade the better of the iracas.
He nailed Leone with a few
jack-rabbit's and used a wicked
headlock that had Antone gasp
ing for air.
In the second heat Paavo
opened up by felling Leone
with a series of wooacnoppers,
but Leone took the first fall
by ramming his opponent into
the corner post and then apply
ing an excruciating chinlock.
Katonen came fighting back
to take the second fall with a
stepover toe hold that made
Leone yowl for mercy.
With the count at a fall
apiece, Leone went through
practically the same routine of
running Paavo slam-bang into
the post, dazing him, and then
taking the match with another
chinlock. ,
Jack LiDSComb outsmarted
Kenny Ackles to take the emi-

pulverized him and took the
match with a naii-crat. -

at the Yankee stadium and was
sold by the Newark farm to
Boston. There he blossomed out
as an established big leaguer
and now' has come into his own
as a hitting sensation..
Holmes Outstanding
Although Holmes stiU is 22
short of Joe DiMaggio's mark
of 50 set in 1941, his feat of
hitting safely in 34 successive
contests, at a .438 pace, lifting
his season mark to .407 and
leading four individual depart
ments and tied for a fifth is by
far the standout Individual job
of the campaign.
It must nave been the Holmes
inspiration thtit pulled the
Braves out of a losing slump
that began with a 24-2 pasting
by Chicago, for Boston twice
whipped Pittsburgh, 13-5 and
14-8, as the left-handed hitting
outfielder topped Hornsby's
mark.
Chicago and St. Louis con
tinued to make the big noise in
the National, the Cubs rambling
over the Phillies twice 11-3 and
5-1 and the Cards thumning the
Brooks, 15-3. The composite re-
suit iinas tne Dodgers' lead
sliced to a single game over the
Bruins with the Red Birds only
one and a half off the pace.
Cubs Extend Win Streak '
The Cubs ran their win streak
to seven and made it 10 of 13
since leaving Wriglcy field to
tour the east as Paul Derringer
and Reliefer Ray Prim got the
credit.
Blix Donnelly handcuffed the
Brooks without too much trou
ble to the dismay of 30,254. The
Red Birds lashed Vic Lombard!
and three successors for 19 hits.
Cincinnati eased out the New
York Giants, 3-2, behind How
ard Fox to hand Van Mungo
his fourth loss.-
New York took a fall out of
the first-place Detroit Tigers,
5-4, with Oscar Grimes doing
most of the hitting and Floyd
Bevens doing all of the pitch
ing for his eighth success.
Mill sweep Doubleheader
Washington opened ud on St.
Louis to sweep a doubleheader,
6-3- and 5-2, holding second
place and moving to within
three games of the Tigers. Rick
Ferrell established a new Amer
ican league record by catching
his 1722nd game in the opener
won Dy uonnny Niggeiing. It
was the 16th triumDh in the
last 20 starts for Ossie Bluege's
flaming Nats.
Jim Bagby and Mel Harder
hurled Cleveland to , a double
victory over Boston, 3-2 and
4-2 with Allie Reynolds coming
on in the ninth of each game
to save the bacon.
Jesse Flores edged Thornton

PORTLAND, July 7 (JP)
Limit catches, of trout in three
Joseohine county rivers the Il

Except on salmon, very scarce
the past week, most other Jo

The commission renorted the

Other sites recommended for
