Cpl. Stanley G. Lcary, ma
rine stationed ut the Murlno Bar
rucks hero, sustained a severe
ly lacerated right arm at about
1:10 a. m. Wednesday night in
front of Max's Coffco shop on
Main.
Stories of witnesses concern
ing tho case aro varied, but as
nuur as cun bo ascertained by the
provost marshal's offlco, Lcnry
was slushed across tho arm with
a sharp Instrument.
According to the report, Lcary
and a nuvy chief wore silling
ot the counter in Max's. E. P.
Kelly ond his wlfo of Los Ange
les, Calif., were also at the coun
ter with a man named Erickson
residing ot the Rivcraido Auto
camp.
A discussion arose between
tha chief and Lcary over the
merits of Gen. Douglus A. Mac
Arthur. Kelly entered Into the
conversation unasked and then
walked out to his car at the
curb. Lcary followed out the
door after him and Kelly struck
him with hla fist. Kelly then
walked to the curb and lunicd
and threatened to shoot Lcary.
The marine walked toward
Kelly .who jumped into his car
and begun to roll up the win
dow. Lcary first tried to reach
In and then drew back and
smashed the window with his
fist.
At this time his orm was se
verely cut und tho nature of the'
wound was not the type of cut
that would como from broken
glass, according to tho provost
marshal's questioning of wit
nesses and expert medical ex
amination of the slash.
Military and city police were
called to the scene and Lcary
was Immediately taken to the
Barracks for medical treatment.
Kelly was taken to tho police
station and questioned by city
police but was later released.
No knife was found on Kelly,
although conflicting reports
point to the fact that he was In
closa conversation with Erickson
before police arrived and it is
known that Erickson immediate
ly left the scene upon arrival
of police officers. Erickson could
not bo found by tho provost
marshal's office for questioning
and Kelly has left town.
Lcary's condition Is said to be
improved but the provost mar
shal will further Investigate the
case.
