Seattle's Rainiers are right
back where they were a week

Beavers bounce back with a per
formance like ineir wire
straight weekend victories over
the San Diego Padres. Seattle
kept pace Saturday night
against the Sacramento Solons,
but dropped both ends of Sun
day's twin bill.
Seali Threaten Leaders
Both Portland and Seattle
though, may well cast a weather
eye in the direction of J. Fran
cis O' Doul's up and coming
San Francisco Seals, now in
third place only four games
back of the Rainiers. Off to a
slow start early in the season,
the Seals continued their rise
last week, manhandling the
Hollywood Stars for a 5-3 series
edge.
Oakland slipped to a fourth
spot tie with Sacramento
through its S-S split for the week
with the Los Angeles Angels.
After nosing out the Padres
4- 3 Saturday, the Beavers took
Sunday's pair 4-2 and 5-1 on
steady pitching performances
by Don Pulford and Syd Cohen.
San Diego's Carl Dumler,
mound sensation of the league
in the early part of the season,
was credited with the loss in
yesterday's opener as Pulford
tossed five-hit ball. Cohen set
the Padres down with six hits
in the nightcap. The double
header was the third the Beav
ers have copped in a row, and
gave the loop-leaders the ab
breviated series 3-1. .
Sac Lick Seattle
Sacramento went 10 innings
to win its opener against Seattle
5- 4, and coasted to a 2-0 victory
in the seven-inning finale. Joe
Woods Jr.," bested Hal Turpin
in the first-game pitching duel,
helDine win his own came by
driving in three runs, one of
which tied the score in the
ninth. Ted Norbert accounted
for three of the Rainiers four
runs in ' the seventh with a
homer over the left field wall.
Gene Babbitt blanked the Skiff-
- men with three hits in the night
cap as his mates converted five
blows off Chet Johnson into
two tallies. Seattle took Sat
urday night's encounter 2-1,
with the clubs winding up in a
Z-z series tie.
San Francisco breezed to a
7-0 win against Hollywood in
the first game yesterday pemna
the five-hit hurling of Frank
Seward. The defeat was Joe
Mishasek's second for the week
at the hands of the Seals after he
had burned up the circuit with
. six straight victories. Credit for
San Francisco's 4-3 loss in the
second game went to Bob Joyce,
the league's top pitcher, who
was hustled into the fray in the
sixth frame to replace Tony
Buzolich. The Seals racked up
a 4-1 decision in Saturday s tilt.
Los Angeles scored two 1-0
wins over Oakland over the
weekend, winning by that fig'
ure Saturday and again in Sun
day's nightcap. The Acorns
grabbed yesterday's opener 11-3.
Lou Novikoff's 350-foot homer
Saturday gave Don Osborn the
edge over Floyd Stromme, both
of whom went the distance on
the mound. Garth (Red) Mann,
Oakland tosser. had little
trouble winning Sunday' first
game, while the second was a
hurling contest between the
Angels "Pancho" Cornelias and
the Acorns' Mitch Chetkovlch.
Cornelias held the Oaks to two
hits, but his mates had to go
two extra innings to get their
lone run.

On Mat Card
This Friday
Promoter Mack Lillard an
nounced this morning that he
had succeeded in signing Antone
Leone and Gorgeous George
Wagner in the main event on the
bicep' bill Friday night at the
armory.
Both gladiators were eager to
come to terms as an aftermath
of an incident last week in which
Leone kissed Wagner over the
head with a ring stool because
George refused to leave the
square. This tussle will provide
plenty of fireworks and will be
a grudge battle in the lull mean
inff of the word.
Lillard said today that ring
stools and water bottles, would
be taken from the ring as either
boy is not above using this
equipment as a weapon.
Leone is reported to have told
Lillard that Wagner was no
match for him and Gorgeous
George is plenty burned .up
about the whole affair. The bout
will go six 10-mlnute rounds or
two out of three falls.
