ACREAGE UP
The number ol farms in
Crook county as shown by the
preliminary count of returns of
the 1945 census of agriculture
was 473, as compared with 495
in 1940, and 534 in 1935. This
was announced today by R. L.
Ackerman, supervisor for the
1945 farm census in the third
Oregon census district with
headquarters at Klamath Falls.
The total land in farms in
Crook county, according to the
preliminary 1945 census count,
was 825,651 acres, as compared
with 817,898 acres in 1940, and
705,008 acres in 1935. Average
size of farms shown in the pre
liminary 1945 census count for
the county was 1746 acres, as
compared with 1652 acres in
1940, and 1320 acres in 1935.
In announcing the 1945 cen--sus
totals of farms and land in
farms. Supervisor Ackerman
pointed out that the figures are
preliminary and subject to cor
rection. Final tabulations of
census returns will be made by
the bureau of the census and an
nounced from Washington when
completed, Ackerman said.

SALEM, June 20 (JP) The
state supreme court, in a far
reaching 5 to 1 decision Tues
day, ruled that the state police
had authority to take a blood
test from an unconscious man
to get evidence to prove he was
drunk. .
: At the same time, the court
said "we are not deciding that
an accused can be forced to un
dergo a physical examination or
to submit to a blood test."
The opinion apparently will
bar the taking of blood tests
from an accused person without
his consent.
The case involved Carroll
Loren Cram, convicted of man
slaughter in Yamhill county -a
year ago. He was charged with
reckless and drunken driving,
two passengers in his car having
been killed while he was driv
ing them home from a dance.
Cram was unconscious for 48
hours after his car overturned,
and during this period, the blood
test was taken.
The ODinion. bv Justice J. O.
Bailey and upholding Circuit
Judge Arlie G. Walker, said that
taxing of a mood test is classed
under the same rules of evi
dence as taking of fingerprints.

Police told Clark Gable, recently
returned from shooting Ger
mans, that he couldn't shoot
coyotes, ground squirrels and
blue jays with his .22 rifle.
Gable was told he'd have to
find some other way to remove
the scavengers which had taken
over his ranch while he was in
the army air force.

The federal government must
decide how it will dispose of war
time industrial plants before
western states can make post
war plans, Gov. Earl Warren of
California declared last night.
Here for today's conference to
organize the board of inter-government
relations, the California
executive said, "the west coast
has a lot of new industry, but
the government controls its
future."
"We can't make plans until
we know what the government
policy will be. It should be the
function of this board to ask
that the government declare it
self," he said.
Warren's party of 17 state
and city officials was met by
Oregon Governor Earl Snell and
Mayor Earl Kiiey. witn uov.
Warren was Roger Lapham,
mayor of San Francisco, who
was to preside at today's meet
ings.
CONFERENCE OPENS
SEATTLE, June 20 VP) The
Western States council's three
day light metals conference,
which begins today, will be ad
dressed Thursday at luncheon
by F. T. Letchfield, San Francis
co banker, Council President
Christy Thomas said yesterday.
Purpose of the conference.
Thomas said, is to create a post
war iigni meiais expansion pro
gram for the west.

sank three small cargo ships, left
another in flames and damaged
three others.
Two B-24s broke off from a
formation bombing Suribachi
airfield, Paramushiro, and Min
ami cape, Shumushu, Sunday,
when they sighted three small
ships off Paramushiro and went
in at 200 feet to sink two of
them. One Liberator was shot
down.
The following day,' a Mitchell
flight located four cargo vessels
off Paramushiro and sank one,
left another burning and severe
ly damaged the remaining two.
Fleet air wing four Harpoons
bombed shipping off Naga cape
in Paramushiro strait on Mon
day by instruments. Results
were not observed. The same
day another flight of navy Har
poons bombed aurtbachi airfield
on Paramushiro, also with un
observed results.
SEATTLE, June 20 (JP) The
case for a land route to Alaska
from the Pacific northwest will
be presented before the Pacific
coast section of the council of
state governments, meeting at
Portland Friday, by the Alaska
highway committee of the gov
ernor's advisory commission on
progress and industry develop
ment, Kemper Freeman, com
mittee member, said yesterday.

The northwest "took it on the

ish Columbia should unite for a
genuine highway now.1"

board chairman told business
men here.

BUILDING DESTROYED

ing, two trucks and one tractor.
The building was being used for
