The Klamath marines were

Leathernecks outhit their rivals
in the second game, 13 hits to

West, center-fielder and pltch

his teammates in hitting. In
Sunday's game he collected a
triple, double and single in four
trips to the plate.
Pawelek, catcher for El Cen

tremendous 400-foot blast over
the fence in the fifth inning of
Saturday's tussle with nobody

In the initial clash, Olson was
the winning pitcher with Hy
Chapin the loser, and in the
second tilt. Green received cred

By PAUL WELLS

Portland's Beavers, pace
makers in the Pacific Coast
league for most of the season,
proved last week by knocking
off the runner-up Seattle Rai
niers five games out of seven,
they can't be sold short. The
series boosted Portland's lead to
four and a half games.
Ten thousand Portland fans
saw their club sweep a Sunday
twin bill 6-1 and 2-0 as the Bea
ver pitching staff cut Rainier
fiower at the plate to a trickle,
n the last four games the Rai
niers got only 21 hits.
Tight Fight for Third
The battle royal for third
place goes into this week tighter
than an ersatz collar, with only
a half a game separating five
California teams.
San Francisco and Oakland
emerged from a ding-dong series
tied for third spot at .494. San
Diego with .488 and Sacramen
to and Los Angeles with .487
apiece are half a notch behind.
Don Pulford and Jack Tising,
both righthanders, tossed Port
land to its double victory yes
terday. Pulford limited the Rai
niers to five hits in the regula
tion opener while Tising Jet
them down with four in the
seven-inning nightcap. Seattle
salvaged Saturday's encounter
Demnd tne steady hurling of
Chet Johnson.
Beavers Come Through
Portland's 5-2 series win was
the second time in three weeks
the loop-leaders have come
through when the chips were
down. When the Beavers open
ed their first stand of the season
against the Rainiers May 29
they had only a half game first
place margin, but took five
games out of eight. Their edge
at the start of the second clash
with Seattle last week was only
a game and a half.
Oakland and San Francisco
split their bill Sunday, the Seals
taking the first game 7-6 and
dropping the afterpiece. 2-0.
Bob Joyce registered his 14th
win of the season in the open
er, but Bob Barthelson, San
Francisco's hard-luck pitcher,
couldn't get on the right side
of the ledger with a five-hit Job
in the finale. Mitch Chetkovlch
handcuffed the O'Doulmen with
one first-inning bingle for the
best mound performance of the
day. The Oaks eked out a 7-6
win Sturday, but lost the se
ries, 4-3.
Padres Win Twice
San Diego, which was in the
doldrums a weeks ago, contin
ued its climb back against Sac
ramento, winning twice Sunday,
9-7 and 8-6. The Padres came
from behind in score five mm
in the ninth inning of the first
encounter, and. checked a last-
frame Solon rally at four tallies
in the nightcap to squeeze out
their second victory. San Diezo
"took the series 5-2, although it
dropped Saturday's game 11-3.
Hollywood's 3-2 and 2-5 split
in Sunday's twin bill gave the
Stars their first series over Los
Angeles since 1942. Joe Mish
asek came through with his
sixth straight win In the open
er, scattering eight Angel hits.
Don Osborn limited the Twinks
to six raps in taking the after
piece. Hollywood won 9-4 Satur
day and annexed the series 4-3.
PARIS (P) Count Deganais'
Bourn won the four-mile grand
steeplechase of Paris by four

The sailors from the Klamath

afternoon by lambasting a
Dunsmuir nine, 8-4. The blue
jackets scored three runs in the
first heat and were never head

in the fourth Inning while Duns
muir runners crossed the plate
onco in the sixth, once in the
seventh, and twice in the ninth.
Two double plays were made
by the air station club and Duns
muir made one twin killing.
Chief Norm Worthloy, conch of
the navy nine, started Pat Pat

lieved him in the fifth inning
with Myers. Several extra-base
clouts were made but no player
smashed a home run. The navy
again ran wild on the base paths
