race tracks in the United States
has spread to Englond. Book
makers reported today that the
wagering on Saturday's derby,
Britain's premier racing classic,
already Is the heaviest in his
tory. They estimated $10,000,
000 would be wagered on the
race by post time.
With Britons able to use their
automobiles once more nn a lim
ited scale, thousands of race

this last wartime derby before it

proval has been granted Spo
kane's Playfair race track for a
24-day season, September 6-Oc-
tober 7, providing certain im
provements are made on the rac
ing strip, Frank W. Brewster,
chairman of the Washington
state racing commission, said
yesterday.'
The track, to function Wed
nesday through Sunday during
the meet, has agreed to elimin
ate chutes on the half-mile oval
and harrow, screen and deeper,
the strip as safety factors.
