Bill Voiselle's surprising form
reversal had baseball tongues
wagging today as the New York;
Giants continued to drop back
toward the pack in the National
league.
All was serene in Mel Otts
camp when Big Bill from
Ninety Six, S. C reeled off
eight successive mound tri
umphs but since Voiselle was
belted out in Cincinnati 10 days
ago, the New Yorkers have
faltered.
It looked as though Voiselle
was about to register his in
itial victory of the first western
jaunt last night but the St.
Louis Cardinals spurted for
three in the last of the ninth
to tip the score in their favor,
4-3.
Gama Held Up
Voiselle really had an excuse
for that one although it would

be hard to find any logical
reason for his failure to last
more than three innings in three
previous starts, two of this he
was charged with losing. The
ace righthander held a 3-1 lead
going into the ninth at Sports
man's park and had given up
one more run when a severe
wind and rain storm interrupt
ed play for almost an hour.
When Voiselle again took the
hill, Ray Sanders greeted him
with a score-tying single and
Whitey Kurowski tripled to win
the game for Reliefer Harry
Brecheen. It was the Giant's
fifth setback in their last six
games.
- Reds Trip Bums
Bucky Walters recovered
from a shaky start by going 13
innings for Cincinnati to beat
Brooklyn, 6-3. Frank McCor
mick's three-run homer broke
up the marathon night duel.
The win stretched Cincinnati's
victory string to six.
Pittsburgh, which took over
second place by a 6-5 shade
over Philadelphia, holds a three
percentage point edge on the
Cards and Brooks, who are tied
for third.
Chicago's tilt with Boston
was washed out in the fifth be
fore the Braves could make it
legal, with Mort Cooper holding
a 5-1 edge at the time.
Yanks Sock Indians
New York's Yankees greeted
Cleveland like long lost rela
tives after a tough series with
Detroit and pummeled the In
dians, 9-2, behind Floyd Bevens
five-hitter, Yank Catcher Mike
Garbark finally broke his hit
famin with two singles after
going 50 times for only one hit
all season.
Detroit dropped two full
games behind the Yanks by
bowing to Boston, 6-4, when
Walt Wilson and 18-year-old
Bill Pierce walked in two runs
with the bases loaded. Dave
Ferriss, appearing as a pinch
hitter, strolled to force in the
tie-breaking score.
White Sox Nip Solons
Washington had the same
trouble when Walt Holborow
passed three Chicago batters in
succession to hand the White
Sox an 11-9 decision in the
nth.

'Gorgeous George' Guzzles
Katonen In Main Mat Tiff
By PAUL HAINES
Gorgeous GeorRe Wagner may
be the "Toast of the Coast," but
he's Just a short drink of water
to Paavo Katonen. George suc
ceeded in dumping Paavo Inst
night in two out of three falls
in the headline tiff on Promoter
Mack Lillnrd's crunch card, but
he knew he had been to the
wars after it was all over.
Wagner carried on an inter
esting conversation with Referee
Wally Moss throughout most of
the tussle which went some
thing like this: Wally: Break the
hold, George. George: Why?
Wally: That's a choke hold.
Fishing
Forecast
Is Poor
PORTLAND, June 2 (-11
Weekend anglers were warned
by the state came commission
not to expect much luck tomor
row in generally high and roily
streams.
The fishing forecast was
"poor" for most eastern and
southern Oregon areas, and the
coastal section was virtually
"washed out."
Wardens said Columbia coun
ty streams are clearing, and
Lane county rivers should be
good with another week of clear
weather. Benton and Coos coun
ties reported streams in fair
condition.
The Deschutes river yielded
a few good catches during the
week.
Marine Nine Set
To Meet Sailors
Sunday Afternoon
Klamath Falls sports fans
will get their first glimpse of
two local service teams Sunday
at 3 p. m. at Recreation park
when the marines from the
Marine Barracks clash with the
sailors from the naval air sta
tion. Rainy weather has forced the
postponement of all baseball
games in this area to date, but
it is hoped that the diamond
will be in sufficiently good con
dition to allow the ball came
Sunday.
A game is also scheduled be
tween the two clubs this after
noon at the air station, but due
to limited seating capacity only
servicemen will be permitted
to attend. The game tomorrow
is open to the public free of
charge.
.
George: No it ain't. And so on
far into the nigm.
Gorseoua Gati Mad
George took time out to argue
with the fans, the reicrec. alio
almost came to blows with his
second. In other words, Gor
geous was a bit irked with one
and all.
Wagner took the first fall In
the third canto by going under
Paavo and seizing him by both
legs and pinning his shoulders
to ho rosin wun a nom wnicn
we shall call a "Wagner spe
cial" in lieu of something more
specific.
In the fourth heat Kntonen
almost broke Wagner's back by
slamming him against the cor
ner ring post and then ovened
the count with a hRtigman's
hold. In the fifth stanza the
boys settled down to work in
earnest. Both went so far as to
climb the ropes seeking an ad
vantage and tlieso tactics finally
ended with Paavo heaving
George out of the ring.
Wagner Takes Match
As Wagner attempted to climb
back into the square, Paavo
threw Moss to one side to get
a clear shot at his rival, but
Georgie had had time to get set
and hung a beauty on Raton
en's button and took the match
with a full body press.
Paavo stormed and ranted
and was last seen pursuing
George into the dressing room.
That dressing room must be the
scene of some dandy battles.
Laone Downs Ackln
Antone Leone guzzled Kenny
Ackles. the Hollywood Wonder
Boy, in the seml-windup by
using methods he must have
picked up on New York's east
side. He gouged, pulled hair,
used his closed fist and made
himself generally objectionable
but he won. With tho count
a fall apiece, Ackles missed with
a shoulder butt and Leone fell
on him to take the bout with a
body press.
In the curtain-raiser Georges
Dusettc topped "Speedy" Ma
loney with his standing full-Nelson
after "Speedy" had lived up
to his handle by displaying
bursts of swiftness that would
have made "Man-of-War" noth
ing but a show horse. When
ever Dusettc went after his fa
vorite hold, Moloney ran so fast
that he could have outrun Jesse
Owens from a standing start.
This bout was far and away
the best display of real rassling
Baksi by knocking out Steve
was a good, clean match. Next
Friday the boys of Cauliflower
Row will slug it out again for
the patrons of Punch Plaza with
at least one new face appearing
on the card.
