tries Saturday afternoon in the
14th running of the annual
southern Oregon-northern Cali
fornia meet at Modoc field.
Faced by the slashing spikes of
Dave Henthorne, the Pelican
cindermen amassed 761 points
while Medford placed second
with 501 tallies and Ashland an
nexed third place with 45i mark
ers. Henthorne personally account
ed for 151 points to take individ
ual high scoring honors for the
meet while lanky Jim Pope gar
nered 141 counters for runner
up position in scoring.
Sets 440 Record
The Klamath speed merchant
broke the tape in the 100-yard
dash with the time of 10 seconds
flat, which is the fastest time re
corded so far this year in the
state. He then went on to win
new laurels by breaking the local
record in the 440-yard dash with
the time of 50:4 seconds. The
previous record was 51:5 sec
onds set by Johnson of Medford

third fastest time recorded in
high school competition in the
state.
Pope turned on plenty of
speed to capture first place in
the 120-yard high hurdles and
200-yard low hurdles. He ran
the first event in 16:1 and the
second in 24:6. He also tied for
first place in the high jump with
Brown of Grants Pass.
With Henthorne running in
the anchor position, the Red-and-White
of KUHS out-distanced
other competitors in the half
mile relay. Grants Pass placed
second in this event and Medford
third. The Klamath team was
composed of two freshmen and
two seniors, Tommy Edwards
and Bob Oodson, Bud Biehn and
Henthorne.
Jim Palmer of Klamath tied
for the top slot in the pole vault
event with Thompson of Ashland
with a jump of 10 feet, 6 inches,
and Johnny Foster copped first
place in the shot with a heave of
40 feet, 11 inches. .
In the broad jump event, Hen
thorne again landed in the mon-
ev by winning second honors be-

This is the third successive
year that the Klamath Falls
trackmen nave annexeci ine
crown in this meet and their vic
tory Saturday gives KUHS pos
session of the trophy for another
year Which is donated by the
Lions club to Me victor.
With this significant triumph
added to their imposing record,
the Pelicans now point toward
the district meet to be held at
Medford Saturday.-

grand slam homers in one season.
The Yankee outfielder, start
ing his first regular season in
the majors, (he played in 38
games last year), belted his sec
ond homer with the bases tun
yesterday as the New Yorkers
split a double header with

13-4 and losing the second 2-1
before 35,308 fans.
The record of four in a sea
son is held jointly by Frank
Sehulte of the Chicago Cubs,
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, Yan
kees: and Rudv York. Detroit
Tigers. None hit his first until
well into May.
Slams Two Homers
In addition to his base clear
ing wallop, the Mill Grove, Mo.,
farmer hit another homer in the
opener, making it the second
time this season that he has hit
two home runs in one game.
