KUHS Will Compete
In Hayward Relays
Coach Paul Deller and 15 Peli
can cindermen will travel to Eu
gene Saturday to compete in the
Hayward relays. Deller is en
tering the Klamath speedsters in
nine events including shot put re
lays, high jump relays. 440 re
lays, 3-mile relays, sprint med
ley, distance medley, shuttle hur
dle relays, and two single events,
the pole vault and the discus.
Lanky Jim Palmer is the top
in tkn nntp vault event
and Ben DeVore will heave the
discus for the Klamath squad.
These are the only two single
events in which KUHS will be
entered.
The results of the relays are
reached by adding the combined
time or distance of the boys par
ticipating in each event.
Top Distance Men -
Herbert Barker and Leonard
Qualm are excellent distance
men and Dave Henthorne is the
lad to watch in the sprints. Hen
thorne will run in the anchor
position in any relays in which
he is entered, Deller said.
This meet is one of the top
track and field attractions of the
season and probably 25 schools
will be represented. If the Peli-
Red Ryder
can trackmen place high In the
standings, it will be indicative of
the ability of the Klamath
speedsters as compared to other
schools in the state, and Deller
is confident that the boys will
finish well above the average.

Wright, veteran Los Angeles

a decision in 10 rounds last
night over Willie Joyce of Gary,
Ind.
The Maryland boxing com
mission barred Wright for life
on Monday, charging he failed
to try against Jackie Wilson of
Pittsburgh, April 9. Wright was
warned by the California com
mission that if he didn't give
his level best against Joyce he
would be barred here, too.

cause of travel delay, tne an

tories for the St. Louis Browns
went into the record books to
day as a companion piece to
their 1944 feat of coppinR a first
American league pennant.
Luke Sewell's gaiiR took up
where they loft off last year by
knocking off Detroit, a luiblt that
paid big dividends in winning
their first flag when they did it
13 times in 22 starts.
Hal Newhouser was the vic
tim of the Brownies' 7-1 upris
ing as Sit! Jakucki. tomato-faced
righthander, allowed only six
well-scattered hits.
One-armed Peto Gray broke
into the majors for the Browns
with a single and was robbed of
a sure double on a circus catch
by Koger Cramer.
Yank Homers Twice
Standout individual perform
ance of the openers was turned
in by the New York Yankees'
Russ Derry, starting his first
full season in the big show.
Derry, a slim Mill Grove, Mo.,
farmer, belted two homers in
his club's 8-4 decision over the
Boston Red Sox. The second
came In a seven-run seventh in
ning rally with the bases jam
med. George Metkovich, Sox first
baseman, set a new league stand
ard he will not be proud of,
when he committed three errors
in that same seventh frame.
The first two were on the same
play when he missed a base
runner going to first and threw
wildly to the plate letting two
men score. The third set the
stage for Derry's grand slam
clout.
Starter Atley Donald was
credited with the win over Rex
Cecil although neither was
around at the finish.
