' .Harry Truman, now president
of the United States, spent about
haU an hour in Klamath Falls
last October 18. A comparative
handful of local people, many of
them S, P. employes who hap
pened to stop by, greeted Tru
man on that occasion. Had it
been known that m a few. short
months, Truman would be presi-

Truman's cheerful attitude so
early in the morning.

talking with Truman was like
talking with one's neighbor. "He
has that common touch and
understanding that was such an
outstanding quality in our past

to him, that he has boundless
good sense, which he so well

pression of Harry Truman is that
he is a man of courage, and will
carry on to completion the great

campaigning as vice presidential
candidate on the democratic tick
et. Today three Klamath demo
crats, who talked with him at
length on the train coming into
Klamath Falls and while he was
here, recorded their impressions,
giving the new president ex
pressions of admiration and con
fidence. They are E. P. Ivory,
democratic county ' chairman;
G. C. Tatman, AFL labor official
and R. C. Woodruff, local busi
nessman. "Fully Qualified"
Ivory declared his belief that
Truman is fully qualified for the
responsibilities that came to him
upon the death . of President
Roosevelt. Ivory Was present
as a delegate at the democratic
national convention at which
Truman was nominated, and he
said that Truman's "record of
quiet,, efficient performance as
head of the Truman committee
placed him In an outstanding
light. His habit of intense, sus
tained effort was amply demon
strated. .He. worked .every min
ute of the-time to accomplish the
purpose of the nation and the
party.. His short, speech of ac
ceptance' showed humility, cour
age and ability."
Ivory, recalling he spent all of
October 18 with the then vice
presidential candidate, said that
while at lunch he had mentioned
he was sitting next to the next
president of the United States.
: Truman, he stated, replied that
that was an eventuality to which
he did not aspire, and for which
he hoped he would not be
called, but, if it did come, he
would do his utmost to fulfill the
responsibility.
