Kathrin Neubert, for more
than SB years a resident of
Klamath county, died at 7
o'clock Friday morning at her
home, 2143 Orchard. Mrs. Neu
bert had been ill for the past
four and one-half years and
death came in her 84th year.
A true pioneer of the early
days, Mrs. Neubert lived to see
the Klamath basin grow from
a sparsely settled area to a
thriving section of southern
Oregon. Kathrin Bauer was
born In Wurttemberg, Germany,
November 3, 1860. She came
to America in 1886 and on the
same boat was Gottfried Neu
bert who later became her hus
band.
Gottfried Neubert. Miss Bauer
and a young woman who later
occame tne wile ot Fred Beck
in Klamath Falls, and died
here, landed in New York and
crossed the comment to Ash
land. As there was no means
of transportation into what was
then Lake county, now Klam
ath, Neubert bought a team and
wagon and drove over the
mountains to Linkvllle (Klam
ath Falls), where he and .Miss
Neubert were married June 25,
1886.
Mr. and. Mrs. Neubert first
settled on a pre-emption claim
near Dairy where they lived
five years, then took up a home-
stoaa n Antelope valley l n
1901, and entered the cattle
business. Mr. Neubert added to
his land until he owned 960
acres. He tells that the first
steer he raised he traded for a
sewing machine for Mrs. Neu
bcrt, and tne second steer for
a dozen sheep.
The family bought a spinning
wheel and Mrs. Neubert made
all the mittens and heavy stock
ings for their needs.

HERALD AND IWWi JtlHaf
In 1929, Mr. and Mr. Neu
bert ' retired and sold their
ranch, moving to the Orchard
avenue residence.
Scores of friends and neigh
bors expressed sorrow today
when they learned of the pass
ing of Mrs. Neubert. Funeral
services will be announced bT
Whitlock's. In addition to her
husband, Gottfried, Mrs. Neu
bert is survived by one daugh
ter, Mrs. C. B. Stiles of ttVet

The powerful steam locowtstives wbteh
pull Great Northern's Empire Builder
develop enormous thirsts. Nearly 244,000
gallons of water are consumed by the
engines pulling a 14-cai paencer train
from Chicago to Seattle. v -
They're fussy about "irwldng'' water,
tool Every gallon must be pure, for al
kalies and other injurious compounds clog
boiler tubes and decrease locomotive
efficiency. ' y
Providing pure "drnldng,' water for ft
large fleet of steam power is costly to Great
Northern. But, the cost is returned in the
consistently smooth performance of the
engines in Empire Builder service.
