22 Ml The decks of the mighty
L'SS Midway heaviest, strong
est and fastest carrier ever
built will be covered with a
"1945 model aircraft" so new it
has not yet seen combat action.
This was disclosed Wednesday
by Artemus L. Gates, assistant
secretary of the navy for air, in a
speech at the christening of the
45,000-ton Midway.
Gates gave no hint of what
the new plane can do. But he
predicted the 1949 model car
rier and plane will not be a
''pleasant combination to be
contemplated by the Japanese
war lords."
Addressing the men and wom
en of the Newport News Ship
building company who built the
awesome weapon, Gates said:
The name, Midway, is excep
tionally appropriate for It was
in that famed battle in June,
1942, that the aircraft carrier
came into its own. The Hornet,
York town and Enterprise were
the backbone of that victory.
And they, like the Midway,
were spawned at Newport
News.
To safeguard the Midway,
Gates declared, it has been giv
en heavy armor, intricate water
tight compartments and im
proved damage control, "great
strides in the direction of In
vulnerability." The Midway will be com-

Own Prisoners
PORTLAND, March 22 UP)
Kitchen and dining room equip
ment costing $10,000 so the city
can feed Its own prisoners would
be provided under an ordinance
before the city council today.
Present contracts for the serv
ice cost about $111,000 annual
ly, but the city-operated mess
would supplant the system
when a new addition to the po
lice station is completed. Plans
also call for a prison farm- to
raise much of the jail food.
